One of the instigators and propagandists of Slovak modernism at the beginning of the 20th century.
Biography
Born in Mala Veska. He received his art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest (1914-1916) and the Art and Industrial School in Prague (1923-1927, now the Academy of Fine Arts (Prague) ). He was a student of August Brems and Franz Thiele.
In 1928 he met Maria Budova, whom he married in 1931.
He made a significant contribution to the formation of Slovak modernism . He and his friend Ludovit Fulla were the authors of the manifesto of Slovak modernists.
He was buried at the Martin Memorial Cemetery .
Creativity
In his work, he used individual techniques of Fauvism and Cubism , turned to the traditions of folk art.
The author of poetic scenes of peasant life, characterized by soft color and generalized linear rhythms (“At the Cradle”, 1929, National Gallery, Prague; “Pastoral”, 1936, private collection), engravings and drawings on the themes of life of the urban poor, permeated with socially critical notes (cycle of lithographs “Love in the city”, 1924; “Without work”, lithography, 1925).
