Biography
After graduating from the lyceum in the city of Suceava (1878), Tarnavsky entered the theological faculty of Chernivtsi University, where he graduated from the doctoral program in 1886. Subsequently, he worked on the history of the Old Testament and Hebrew in the cities of Vienna , Breslau (now Wroclaw , Poland ) and Berlin during the years 1898-1900. After graduation, he worked as a priest in with. Stroesti (Suceava County), pastor and professor of religious history in Suceava, priest in Chernivtsi . After that, he began teaching at the University of Chernivtsi with the post of associate professor and freelance professor. Subsequently, Vasily Tarnavsky became an ordinary professor and head of the Department of Biblical History of the Old Testament and Hebrew theological faculty. For some time Tarnavsky led the department of practical theology, taught special courses from Aramaic , Syriac and Arabic . Vasily Tarnavsky was elected five times the dean of the theological faculty and twice (1918-1919 and 1919-1920 academic years) the rector of the University of Chernivtsi. In addition to teaching, he also conducted social activities: he was the director and editor of the Candela newspaper (1923-1932), the chairman of the Association of Bukovinian clergy (1923-1924). In connection with the active pedagogical work at the department and especially thanks to his scientific works, Vasily Tarnavsky is considered one of the most prominent Romanian Orthodox theologians in the history of the Old Testament.
Vasily Tarnavsky died on February 4, 1945 in Bucharest .
