Biography
Ivan Nikiforovich Kovalenko was born on December 24, 1905 in the village of Aobovo (now - within the precincts of Idritsa village, Pskov region ). In 1926 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1930 he graduated from the 2nd artillery school, after which he served in command and staff positions in artillery units. In 1934 he graduated from the artillery sector of the Special Courses for the commanding staff of the Navy [1] .
During World War II, Kovalenko initially served in the Pacific Fleet , and in 1943 he was transferred to the central apparatus of the USSR Navy, was a commander for combat training. Senior Artillery Intelligence Officer, Head of the 3rd and 2nd Divisions, Deputy Head of the 2nd Division of the Navy Coastal Defense Directorate [1] .
After the war, Kovalenko continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1950 he graduated from the Artillery Courses of officers at the Dierzhinsky Military Artillery Academy. From 1951 he served in the Black Sea Fleet , commanded his coastal defense, then he was chief of naval missile units, head of the department — chief of coastal missile-artillery troops. He was the organizer of the rearmament of the Black Sea coastal defense with the latest at that time artillery and missile systems. In May 1968 he retired. He died on February 2, 1970 , buried in the cemetery of Communards in Sevastopol [1] .
He was awarded the Order of Lenin , three Orders of the Red Banner , Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, three orders of the Red Star , a number of medals and a nominal weapon [1] .
