Biography
Since 1869, she worked in the laboratory of A.N. Engeldart at the St. Petersburg Forest Institute, since 1870, in the laboratory of P.A. Kochubey . Under the direction of D. I. Mendeleev, she conducted practical classes with students of St. Petersburg public courses.
In 1870, Volkova published an article where she first described the receipt of pure ortho-toluenesulfonic acid, its acid chloride and amide (later acid chloride and amide were used as the basis for the production of saccharin ). The fusion of toluene sulfonic acids with alkalis A.F. Volkova received the corresponding cresols, thereby contributing to the disclosure of the structure of sulfonic acids. From para-cresol she first obtained para-tricresol phosphate, which later became widely used as a plasticizer component for plastics. For three years (1870–1873), in the journal of the Russian Chemical Society Volkova, about two dozen articles were published on the amides of aromatic sulfonic acids and some of their derivatives studied by her. Scientific Achievements
- Obtaining in its pure form orthotoluenesulfonic acid , as well as its acid chloride and amide (1870);
- Obtaining paratricresolphosphate from paracresol ;
- Establishing the structure of toluene sulfonic acids (by fusing them with alkalis);
- The discovery of the fact that when the ammonia residue is replaced in the amides of sulfonic acids by an acid residue with an acid residue (e.g., a benzoic acid residue), amide derivatives are obtained that show all acid reactions, as well as the production of acid chlorides and amides corresponding to these acids. Memory
In her honor named Volkov crater on Venus .
