Mercedes-Benz W112 is based on the W111 platform; outwardly, it differs from this series only in its more extensive chrome finish [2] , as well as in the interior with a higher quality interior using leather and noble wood; technically, with the M189 six-cylinder injection engine with a large cylinder block and a displacement of 3 liters, air suspension [2] , power steering and automatic transmission [3] , disc brakes on all wheels, as well as a limited-slip differential on the rear axle.
In total, 5202 sedan, 2419 coupe, 708 convertibles and 1546 with an extended wheelbase were produced during the production period [4] .

History
In the late 1950s, Daimler AG embarked on a standardization policy, planning to unify the entire range of vehicles on one next-generation platform. The release of all 2-door versions of the 300S ( W187 ) ended in 1957, and in 1958 the 220SE Ponton ( W128 ) model with fuel injection appeared. A new generation of fintail models was introduced in 1959. The first were the 220 / 220S / 200SE sedans ( Mercedes-Benz W111 ), as well as the four-cylinder 190 ( Mercedes-Benz W110 ) and 190D. A replacement for the large W189 300 sedan was under development. Instead of developing a new platform, it was decided to install the W189 six-cylinder 3-liter engine in the W111 body. This platform at that time was the most progressive in the Mercedes-Benz prayer line and made it possible to implement various innovations - such as, for example, programmable deformation zones that protect the driver and passengers in a collision.
As a result, in the fall of 1961, at the Frankfurt Motor Show , Mercedes-Benz introduced the new Mercedes-Benz W112 300SE model - a car that had the same body as the W111, but was designed to replace the luxurious W186 300 series and W189 limousines. With this car, the company began to use the letter "S" in the designation of its own large sedans. The 300SE was notable for its passive safety, luxurious finish and equipment. The car had a steering column folding at impact and the initially calculated zones of collapse of the body front and rear. Externally, the model received oval vertical headlights. A special difference from all other vehicles built by Mercedes-Benz is the nameplate on the trunk lid: the inscription “300 SE” was equipped with a chrome trim. A similar design was used on all W112 sedans from 1961 to 1965.
To separate the W112 from the W111, the company sold these models in different salons, and also created separate advertising brochures for them. In February 1962, coupe and convertible options were introduced.
Since March 1963, a version appeared with an extended (10 cm) wheelbase 300SE long , which continues to form the basis of the company's elongated limousines. The cost of a classic sedan for 1963 was 24 500 German marks, the long-wheelbase version - 27 800 [5] . At the same time, the company introduced a true replacement for Adenauer in the face of the new W100 600 . As a result, demand for the W112 fell, and production fell sharply: in 1962 a total of 2769 units of the model were produced, but the next year this figure dropped to 1382 [1] .
The sedan was completed in July 1965 with the advent of the W108 / 109 series. The production of the coupe and convertible continued until 1967, after the sedan was discontinued. In 1967, the company decided to discontinue the production of the M189 six-cylinder engine, which was finally outdated from a structural point of view. Together with him, the leadership decided to discontinue the release of the Mercedes-Benz W112.
The coupe and convertible Mercedes-Benz W112 served as the basis for the creation of the later Mercedes-Benz R107 roadsters and the C107 coupe in the 1970s.

The frame of the car is made of steel. The front suspension is independent on double wishbones, the rear is single-link with independent wheel suspension and level control. Both the front and rear springs are pneumatic cylinders with torsion stabilizer. Telescopic shock absorbers are installed on both sides.

Transmission
Automatic transmission in the car Mercedes-Benz W112 has become the standard (as an option offered manual transmission) [3] . The model was equipped with power steering and air suspension, which were not even in the most expensive version of the W111 called 220SE.

Engine
The car was equipped with a 6-cylinder SOHC [2] engine M189 (III generation / 189.984) with a working volume of 3 liters, giving out power of 160 hp. (118 kW) and 250 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm. The maximum speed was 180 km / h.
After 1964, the engine was modernized (M189 V / 189.986) and generated 170 horsepower. (125 kW) and 249 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The maximum speed increased to 190 km / h.
The fuel injection with mechanical adjustment was carried out in the intake manifold. At the beginning of production, the power unit was integrated with a 2-piston injection pump manufactured by Bosch , and since 1964 - with a 6-piston. Cooling was carried out using water supplied by a pump (volume was 16.8 l). The electrical system generated a current of 12 V. The generator power was 300 watts. Ignition was carried out using a battery. The fuel tank was located at the rear of the car and contained 65 liters (from 1961 to 1963), 82 liters - from 1963.
