Implementation
Windows , OS X , Android and GNU / Linux distributions, such Ubuntu and Linux Mint are examples of modern operating systems that support safe mode.
The operating system in safe mode will work in the mode of limited functionality, it allows you to quickly find the problematic components, since many minor components are disabled.
Depending on the operating system, the safe mode, as a rule, loads the minimum number of executable modules, except for the most necessary ones, which display information and accept input data. Safe Mode can also be in the form of a parallel mini operating system that does not have configuration information for the main operating system. For example, in Microsoft Windows , the user can also boot into the recovery console , a small troubleshooting mode, which is separate from the main operating system (you can also get here by booting from the installation CD).
Operating Systems
Windows
In Windows, safe mode (for 7 / Vista [1] / XP [2] / 2000 / ME / 98/95 ) is available in NTLDR , by pressing the F8 key before booting the OS. [3] . However, with Windows 8, the old method does not work, you need to press either the Shift-F8 keys or reboot from the usual graphic mode with special options. [four]
Unix
The equivalent in Unix-like operating systems is single-user mode , in which the demons and X.org server do not start, and only the root user is available. Often, this mode is used to reset passwords of other accounts, while previous passwords cannot be restored [5]
Application software in safe mode
Application software sometimes offers safe mode. In PHP , up to version 5.4, the interpreter offers a safe mode with more stringent security measures. [6]
