MDI mode ( eng. Manual Data Input mode ) is the designation commonly used in CNC systems for the manual input mode of G-code control commands, in which each program block is sent for execution immediately after input [1] . In contrast to the automatic mode of program execution, the manual entry mode does not require preliminary dialing and preparation of the control program before its execution.
MDI mode is used to set up the machine, to test individual functions of the control program, or to perform primitive actions, such as moving to specified coordinates, testing routines [2] , tool change, tool binding, part binding, turning the spindle on or off, or M- codes (turning on the coolant , turning on the lubrication of the guides , etc.) [3] . Some M-functions can be intended for use only in MDI mode for machine maintenance, for example, phased replacement of a tool in machining centers [4] .
Some CNC systems allow using the MDI mode for creating and debugging control programs with the possibility of subsequent saving to the information storage device [5] .
MDI mode in CNC systems cannot be used during program execution in automatic mode [1] [2] .
