Biography

Born in Kabelvog, Norway , into the family of a rural priest, Hans Egede . Father Paula was devoted to the idea of reestablishing contacts with the forgotten colony of the Greenland Normans , according to tradition, who remained faithful to Catholicism after the Reformation . Despite his own financial difficulties in Denmark, with the support of Norwegian merchants and Danish missionaries, Hans Egede managed to equip Greenland with three ships that left the port of Bergen in 1721. A few months later, ships with the Hans family and the colonists stopped in a fjord near modern Nuuk , where the elder Egede began his preaching.

Paul helped his father in his work, and when Hans returned to Denmark because of the death of his wife Gertrude Rask, he abandoned his desire to become a naval officer, taking over from his father the title of Superintendent of the Greenland mission. However, in general, the activities of the Danish Lutheran mission among the Eskimos were not as successful as the preaching of the Moravian brothers [2] .

In 1779, Paul was elected bishop of Greenland . He died in Copenhagen on June 6, 1789 , publishing a diary about his life in Greenland shortly before his death [3] [4] .
