Events of the early 40s of the 13th century

In the early 40s of the XIII century there was an internecine struggle between Daniil Romanovich Galitsky and his brother Vasilko against Rostislav Mikhailovich Chernigovsky . Both sides tried to establish themselves on the Galician land. The Romanovichs managed to take Galich , and Rostislav fled to Hungary [1] . At that time, in Przemysl was the "glorious singer" of Mitus. The only source where there is a mention of the singer Mitus is the Galician-Volyn annals. According to the chronicles, he was an opponent of Daniil Galitsky and did not want to serve him (the chronicler describes him proud). Mitus found refuge with the Przemysl bishop, also an adversary of the Romanovic. In 1241 (according to N. F. Kotlyar 1242 [2] [3] ) the troops of Daniil of Galitsky captured Przemysl. In particular, the singer was captured, who was robbed, tied up and brought to Daniil Romanovich [4] [5] . According to N. F. Kotlyar, most likely Mitus ended his days in the prison of Prince Galitsky [3] .

Researchers Versions

MA A. Maksimovich considered Mitus a famous church singer who belonged to the singing Przemysl bishop and did not want to become him under Prince Daniel [6] . N.P. Sidorov added to the version of the church singer with one observation that at that time Daniel was building the city of Holm and moving the religious center there, so a new singer was needed for the new church built [7] . According to D. I. Ilovaysky, Mitus was a secular singer and court poet, with which N. F. Kotlyar agreed [8] . Also, V. T. Pashuto [9] , D. S. Likhachev [10] and others insisted on the version of the court poet and singer.

In 1945, the writer A.K. Yugov suggested that Mitus be considered the author of "The Words about Igor's Campaign" , however, researchers (N.P. Sidorov, B. A. Rybakov , D. S. Likhachev and others) noted the weakness of the arguments and did not support this version is [11] [12] [13] . According to the article by N.P. Sidorov, philologist N.V. Vodovozov also believed that the author of the "Word ..." was the singer Mitus, mentioned in the Galician Chronicle . However, in the publications of N. V. Vodovozov this version is not reflected [14] .

In Fiction

The main character of Mitus appears in poems - “Singer of Mitus” by N. I. Kostomarov and “Riot of Mitus” by I. Ya. Franko [15] . The plot about the struggle between Prince Daniel and Mitusa is reflected in the novel “And the Earth, and Zelo, and the Song” by R. I. Ivanichuk , as well as in the novel “Buest Mitusa” by N. L. Bichui [16] . Also, in honor of the Galician singer in the early 20s of the 20th century, the literary group “Mitus” in Lviv was named, which published a magazine under the same name [17] .
