History

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, American artists began to gather around the New Hope Hill (New Hope) in Bucks County , located less than forty miles from Philadelphia and seventy miles from Manhattan along the Delaware River with its picturesque surroundings.

The “father” of the colony is William Lathrop, who settled here in 1898. In the same year he was joined by Edward Redfield , who became the co-founder of the colony. They were visited by artists Walter Schofield , George Sotter and Henry Snell , who became members of the colony since 1902. In 1907, Daniel Garber came here. [1] Soon Charles Rosen , Morgan Colt , Robert Spencer , Rae Sloan Bredin joined them , after which the rumor about this artistic settlement spread among American painters. Other artists followed, the colony began to grow and flourish. New replenishment arrived in the 1910s and 1920s. But an increase in the number of painters ultimately led to a split between the Impressionists and the emerging proponents of modernism.

Lathrop played an important role in creating the exhibition site of the art colony - Phillips Mill - a stone mill of the XVIII century , which was located next to his house. In October 1928, local artist William Taylor became the head of the committee for the purchase and transfer of the mill to a community center. The mill was purchased for $ 5,000 and Lathrop became the first president of this art center, which has become the Phillips Mill Community Association , which continues to operate today.
