History
It was formed in the spring of 2000 as a result of the merger of the Danish company MD Foods and the Swedish Arla. It is a cooperative owned by 10,600 milk producers in Sweden and Denmark.
In 2006, Arla Foods fully experienced the effects of the “Danish caricature” scandal against the Prophet Muhammad . After the Danish government refused to condemn the caricatures of the prophet, the cooperative goods, along with other Danish products, were boycotted first in Saudi Arabia and then in other Middle Eastern countries (the Middle East is the largest market for Arla outside Europe). On February 3, 2006, a company spokesperson said the company’s sales in the Middle East had completely stopped, resulting in a daily loss of $ 2 million.
Activities
In 2005, Arla Foods processed 8.5 million tons of milk .
The total number of staff is 20.1 thousand people. The cooperative’s turnover for 2005 is about $ 8.2 billion.
