Biography

Karl Christian is the son of Prince Karl Augustus of Nassau-Weilburg and Augusta Frederick Nassau-Idstein, daughter of Prince George Augustus of Nassau-Idstein . The Danish Colonel Carl de la Potri, who went with his pupil to Lausanne, was appointed Karl Christian's teacher. In 1753, Karl Christian inherited his father under the tutelage of Prince Karl of Nassau-Uzingensky , but in 1754 he was recognized as the adult emperor Franz I Stefan . Karl Christian handed over the rule in the principality to his teacher de la Potry, and he himself enlisted in the Dutch army with the rank of infantry general, served as the governor of Bergen op-Zom and Maastricht , the stalter of Sluys and the commander of the Dutch horse guard. Since 1769, Karl Christian, with the rank of Field Marshal-Lieutenant and Field Marshal, led the Upper Rhine regional troops.

On March 5, 1760, the 25-year-old Carl Christian married in The Hague the 17-year-old Caroline of Orange (1743-1787), the daughter of Prince William IV of Orange and Princess Anne , the eldest daughter of the British king and Elector of Braunschweig George II . The spouses Karl Christian and Carolina gave birth to 16 children.

Before the transfer of the court to Nassau-Weilburg in 1785, Karl Christian was at home from time to time. After the death of de la Potry in 1770, the Principality was commissioned by Karl Christian under the command of Baron Friedrich Ludwig von Bozheim .

In 1783, Karl Christian signed an agreement on the Nassau Crown Union, which secured power in Nassau. Karl Christian was succeeded by the eldest son Friedrich Wilhelm in 1788.
