Common, large and abundant species, widespread in Europe (recently introduced to Brazil) [2] .
According to the literature, it populates both oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes.
It prefers to settle among the vegetation: Myriophyllum, Nymphaea, Nuphar, Chara , but sometimes it is also found without plants, up to a considerable depth, and sometimes among open water plankton (especially at night). Findings of this species in reservoirs, river arms and floodplains, ponds, hypogean waters, temporary waters, as well as in lowlands and mountainous regions at heights of up to 2500 m are reported. Prefers waters with pH> 3.9 and> 2.1 mg Ca 2+ dm -3 [2] .
The sexual period takes place in September - October. Females develop up to three embryos. In the absence of predators, this species prefers biotopes with higher aquatic vegetation [2] .
