History
The Gulustan Palace was built in 1980 [3] on the initiative of the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR for the construction of Alish Lemberansky [4] . The architects of the palace are N. M. Hajibeyov and A. Yu. Amirkhanov, the designers are N. I. Ismailov and K. A. Kerimov [2] . The project of the building was developed at the Bakgiprogor Institute [5] . In 1982, the team of authors of the palace (architects N. M. Hajibeyov and A. Yu. Amirkhanov, designers N. I. Ismailov and K. A. Kerimov, engineers F. I. Rustambekov and T. Ya. Sharinsky, builders T. Sh Akhmedov and A. I. Kevorkov) [6] was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR [2] [6] .
The palace was designed for holding mass events of both citywide and republican scale: concerts, receptions, New Year's evenings, etc. [6]
On September 20, 1994, an oil contract was signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the international consortium of oil companies in the Gulustan Palace, known as the “ Contract of the Century ” [7] .
Such events as the 135th anniversary of the Azerbaijani press (2010) [8] , the International Humanitarian Forum (2011) [9] , the 20th anniversary of the state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2011) [10] , etc. were held in the Gulustan Palace.
Architecture
The building of the palace "Gulistan" is located in the mountainous part of Baku, where you can observe the panorama of the capital and the view of the Baku bay . At this point, the relief drops sharply from west to east. The authors of the project took advantage of this when designing [6] . Architect Rena Efendizade calls the architects' three-dimensional solution for building a palace on such a complex topography correct. According to Ephendizade, the palace “flattened out along the edges of the relief, without disturbing its structure” [11] .
The authors of the project used a single motif traditional for the Azerbaijani national architecture in the palace architecture: a veranda framed by an arcade (aivan). According to the authors of the book “The Best Works of Soviet Architects 1981–1982,” this veranda, “cantileverly hanging over the walls of the first floor, creates the impression of lightness, a refined play of light and shadow.”
Palace "Gulistan" has two floors and another basement . On the ground floor with an improvised scenic platform with a disco, rooms for board games and billiards, a cinema for 100 seats, a children's cafe with 40 seats, as well as bars for 75 and 129 seats, it was planned to hold mass cultural events. On the ground floor there were shops of souvenirs and various national products, as well as wardrobes [6] .
On the second floor, where there is a hall for 960 seats with two lobbies, there are two wide main staircase. The scene of the large hall is connected by a ramp with artistic rooms that are located on the mezzanine floors. From the lobby, where there are also bars, a door opens to a two-tier oriental restaurant with 179 seats and banquet rooms with 149 seats [6] .
The building volume of the palace is 79,424 m³, and the usable area is 8,525 m² [6] .
