Biography
Orphaned during World War II .
He studied at the Hamburg Higher School of Music with Eliza Hansen . In 1964 , he recorded the first disc (with the works of Mozart), in 1965 he became the first winner of the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition (the competition was held for the second time, but the first prize was not awarded at the first competition). After that he toured extensively throughout Europe and the USA.
In the 1970s, Eshenbach gradually switched from performing to conducting. He took lessons from George Sell since 1967 (not to mention constant creative communication with Herbert von Karayan ), made his debut as a conductor in 1972 with the Bruckner Third Symphony, and in 1979 took the first official post - the position of chief conductor of the Rhineland-Palatinate Philharmonic Orchestra (until 1981 ).
Subsequently, Eshenbach led the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich ( 1982 - 1985 ), the Houston Symphony Orchestra ( 1988 - 1999 ), the North German Radio Orchestra ( 1998 - 2004 ) and the Philadelphia Orchestra ( 2003 - 2007 ) - this last period was marked by a protracted conflict with musicians and musical criticism . In 2000 - 2010, Eschenbach led the Paris Orchestra .
Among the many recordings as a conductor are works by Anton Bruckner , Gustav Mahler (all symphonies) [1] , Alfred Schnittke (all violin concerts with Gidon Kremer ).
As a pianist, Eshenbach is especially known for his interpretations of the music of Mozart and Schubert , as well as his duet performances with Cimon Barto .
