Family
Antonio Bustamante's father, Juan Manuel Sánchez de Bustamante y García del Barrio, was a doctor in Havana and a professor of descriptive anatomy at the University of Havana.
In 1885, Bustamante married Isabel Pulido Pages. They had three sons: Gustavo and Antonio Arturo Sanchez de Bustamante Pulido, both were lawyers, and the third son, Dario, died as a law student. One of the grandsons of Bustamante, Antonio Sanchez de Bustamante Montoro, was also a lawyer and law professor at the University of Havana.
Study
Sanchez de Bustamante received his primary and secondary education at the College de Belen, Havana, and his higher education at the Cardinal Cisneros Institute, Madrid .
Bustamante began to study law at the Complutense University of Madrid , while his father served as a senator in the Spanish Cortes . Bustamante returned to Cuba and in 1884 received a degree in licentiate of civil and canonical law at the University of Havana. A year later, he completed his doctoral thesis on the historical evolution of the Cuban State Council and received his doctorate from the University of Havana.
Labor Activity
From 1913 to 1923, Bustamante was dean of the Havana Bar Association. Being in this position, in December 1916 he organized the First National Legal Conference. The conference was convened to review and update Cuba’s legal system.
Bustamante was the first president of the National Academy of Arts and Literature. He was also one of the founding members of the Cuban Academy of Spanish. From 1942 until his death, he was president of this academy. Bustamante was also the founder and president of the Cuban Association of International Law.
In 1908, Bustamante became a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague . In 1921, he was appointed judge of the Permanent Chamber of International Justice , which was established under the auspices of the League of Nations ; and was reelected in 1930 for a second term, which was to end in 1942.
Codex Bustamante
Bustamante is the author of one of the most significant regional codifications of private international law - Code Bustamante, which was approved by the majority of Latin American countries at the VI International Conference in Havana on February 20, 1928.
This code consisted of 437 articles, forming an introductory section and four books:
- I - on international civil law,
- II - on international trade law,
- III - on international criminal law,
- IV - about the international process.
This code has been ratified by Bolivia , Brazil , Venezuela , the Republic of Haiti , Guatemala , Honduras , Dominican Republic , Costa Rica , Cuba, Mexico , Nicaragua , Panama , Peru , El Salvador and Ecuador ; in other American states, including the USA , it is used in courts as an auxiliary source of law.
