Crater Sarton ( lat. Sarton ) - a large ancient impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the Belgian-American chemist and science historian Georges Alfred Leon Sarton (1884-1956) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the Nectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
From the northwest side of the crater Sarton adjoins the crater of Weber . The other closest neighbors of the crater are Coulon Crater in the northeast; the Wegener crater in the southeast; Wood and Landau craters in the south and Gulstrand crater in the west-south-west [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 71.3 km [3] , depth 2.75 km [1] .
Sarton crater has a polygonal shape and moderately destroyed. The shaft is flattened, the western and eastern sections of the shaft are slightly straightened, the western part of the shaft is marked by a cluster of small craters. The inner slope of the terrace-like structure, uneven in width, reaches a maximum width in the southern part. The height of the shaft above the surrounding terrain reaches 1280 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 4,200 km ³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is even, probably flooded by lava , in the center of the bowl there is a massive rounded double central peak. In the north-west of the central peak there is a conspicuous small cup-shaped crater.
The crater is located inside the formation with a diameter of 530 km informally referred to as the Coulomb-Sarton basin.
