Arch Moscow

ARCH Moscow - the annual international exhibition of architecture and design . It has been held since 1995 in Moscow , at the Central House of Artists (CHA) on Krymsky Val . The organizer is the company "Expo-Park" [1] . The project authors and permanent curators of the exhibition are Vasily Bychkov and architectural historian Bart Goldhorn [2] .

Description

ARCH Moscow combines a festival of modern architecture and a commercial exhibition and attracts architects, designers, developers , builders, sales representatives, private customers and journalists from around the world [3] . In the framework of the event, seminars and master classes, lectures, and professional discussions are held on contemporary trends in Russian and world architecture, urban planning, and the improvement of the urban environment [4] .

History

Beginning

The idea of ​​creating an architectural exhibition in Moscow belonged to Vasily Bychkov, director of the Central House of Artists and the Expo-Park exhibition company. In 1995, he authored five projects: the Art Moscow contemporary art fair, the ARCH Moscow architecture and design fair, and three professional exhibitions Design and Advertising, Book World, and Educational Technology. Initially, the events were planned to be held within the walls of Moscow State University , but the CHA was chosen as the final venue for them [5] .

The first years of the project financing were carried out due to commercial events held by Expo-Park. In 2001, the exhibition received state support from the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the Union of Moscow Architects [6] .

Exhibitions

1990s

The 1st Moscow Salon “Architecture and Design” was held on June 12-16, 1996, gathering 37 participants and 10 thousand visitors [7] . A year later, on May 26-30, 1997, a similar event was already held as part of the ARCH Moscow 850 festival of architecture dedicated to the 850th anniversary of Moscow [8] . III salon from the series “Architecture and Design”, which was held May 26-31, 1998, was called “Interior Design” and was dedicated to architectural design and interior design [9] .

Since 1999, the exhibition "Architecture and Design" began to be held annually as part of the ARCH Moscow Week of Modern Architecture, that year it brought together 62 participants and 20 thousand visitors [10] . At the 2000 event, participants were expected to receive awards in the following nominations: the best exposition, the best interior, the best interior element, the best non-commercial exposition, the best building, unique art material, the best non-commercial project. Special prizes were awarded for unique artistic material and an original artistic gesture [11] .

2000s

In 2001, the VI exhibition of architecture and design "ARCH Moscow" (May 15-19) was first held with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the Union of Moscow Architects [12] . In addition to numerous Russian projects, the exhibition “The Living City of London ”, expositions from the laboratory of Columbia University and the University of California at Los Angeles ( USA ) were presented at it [13] . The following year, at the 7th exhibition (May 14–8), the center of the special exposition was the work of the English architect Peter Cook Also, as part of the event, a master class was held by the French designer Philippe Starck [14] .

The VIII ARCH Moscow Exhibition of Architecture and Design, which was held from May 13 to 17, 2003, for the first time became thematic: “The Present Present”. The curators of the exhibition are architects Boris Bernasconi and Cyril Ass . Two projects were dedicated to the reconstruction of historic buildings - the transformation into the Arsenal Museum in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and the preservation of the Moscow Hotel [15] .

In 2014, the IX exhibition “ARCH Moscow” (May 12–16) was devoted to architectural losses. The installation in the form of tombstones presented on it symbolized the loss of three architectural monuments of Moscow: the Moscow Hotel, the Voentorg department store and the Manege [16] . In 2004, the Architect of the Year Award was approved [17] . The theme of the next X exhibition of architecture and design (June 8-12) was formulated as “X-files”. The curators of the event were Vlad Savinkin, associate professor of the Moscow Architectural Institute and Vladimir Kuzmin, head of the Pole Design studio. The public was presented with projects for the reconstruction of the Children's World , Domodedovo Airport , and an expansion plan for the Central House of Artists [18] . Special guests of the exhibition were architects Zaha Hadid , Ron Arad , Lee Prince ( Great Britain ), Hans-Jörg Tangermann ( Germany ) [19] .

The 11th ARCH Moscow Exhibition of Architecture and Design was held from May 31 to June 4, 2006. The theme of the event is “Star Architecture. Architecture of Stars ”raised the problem of implementing world-famous architects' projects in Russia. Special guests of the exhibition were the Frenchman Dominic Perrault , the British Norman Foster (Great Britain) , the American Tom Mayne ( USA ), the Dutch Rogier van der Heide and Eric van Egeraat [20] . The 12th exhibition of 2007 (May 30 - June 3) was dedicated to urban space. Special guests of this event: architects Rem Koolhaas (Netherlands), Michel Devin (France), Gaetano Pesce (Italy), landscape designers Chino Dzukki (Italy) and Alexander Over (Germany). Also within the framework of the event, films on architectural subjects from the collection of the House of Cinema were shown, a series of excursions around Ostozhenka , industrial zones on Strelka and Lefortovo [21] .

XIII exhibition "ARCH Moscow", held from May 27 to June 1, 2008 under the theme "How to live", was devoted to the development of housing and social housing . The Russian pavilion of the exhibition was in the Central House of Artists, the international one was in the building of the Shchusev Museum of Architecture , the Moscow one was in the Tretyakov Gallery [22] . The following year, XIV ARCH Moscow (May 27–31) collected the work of young Russian and foreign architects. The theme of the event, formulated as "NEXT!", Was subsequently repeated more than once. At the exhibition, the exposition “New Names” and the “Vanguard” award for young architects under the age of 33 years were first established [23] [24] . In 2010, the theme of the 15th exhibition (May 26–30) was Perestroika. Modernization of the city. " The visitors were presented projects of modernization of Russian and European cities, including Moscow, Paris and Perm , restructuring of urban areas of the Soviet era, based on the close experience of European countries [25] .

2010s

In 2011, 2013 and 2017, the exhibition of architecture and design was dedicated to the work of young professionals and was called "ARCH Moscow NEXT!" At the XVI exhibition in 2011 (May 25–29), the public was presented with the Skolkovo Foundation’s urban development project for the first time, and art critic Grigory Revzin also gave a thematic lecture [26] . Another important event of the exhibition was the presentation of the international prize named after Yakov Chernikhov “Challenge of the time”. Her laureate was the architectural duo "Fantastic Norway" [27] . In 2013, the XVIII exhibition (May 22–26) was visited by the chief architect of Moscow, Sergey Kuznetsov . Among the exhibits were models of New Moscow , which included already embodied objects - the Aeroflot office complex, the Skolkovo management school, and future projects for the modernization of urban areas, for example, the Likhachev plant [28] . The XXII exhibition, held May 24–28, 2017 under the supervision of Elena Gonzalez and Ruben Arakelyan, gathered 12 installations of young Russian architectural bureaus within the framework of the project “Architecture NEXT. New voices ” [29] . This exhibition was held with the support of the Civil Forum of the Public Chamber of Moscow and held a round table "Principles of renovation: creating a comfortable living environment." Also at the exhibition was presented the book "Mass Housing in Russia: History, Criticism, Prospects": the presentation was attended by architects Sergei Kuznetsov and Anatoly Belov [30]

In 2012, 2014 and 2016, the Art Moscow exhibition was held as part of the Moscow Biennale of Architecture. In 2012, the theme of the XVII exhibition of architecture and design (May 23–27) was “Identities”, and additional sites were the Shchusev Museum of Architecture, the Museon art park and the Artplay design center [31] . During the Biennale, experts from the Union of Architects of Russia discussed the exact coordinates of the grave of Kazimir Malevich in Nemchinovka , lost during the Great Patriotic War [32] . Special guests of the round table devoted to the role of Russian architects in world discourse were British designer James McAdam and curator of the International Architecture Festival in Barcelona, Jeremy Melvin [33] . The 19th exhibition of 2014 (May 21–25) was held under the theme “Quarters” and reflected plans for the development of residential and business quarters in Moscow. The largest exhibits were the atomic energy pavilion at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements , the project for the reconstruction of the site in front of the Polytechnical Museum , the project "New Lefortovo ", a new residential quarter in the vicinity of the Dynamo metro station , and the Edalgo microdistrict in Kommunarka . A separate stand, which included a model of the new building of the Russian Olympic Committee , was dedicated to the reconstruction of Luzhniki [34] . The theme of the XXI exhibition "ARCH Moscow" in 2016 (May 18-22) was "Architecture and Life." Among the exhibits were the “crystal palace” of the Philharmonic in the Zaryadye park under construction, the reconstruction project of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts , the ZILART quarter of the future Hermitage Center, as well as the new buildings of the Tretyakov Gallery [35] . The XXIII exhibition of architecture and design “ARCH Moscow” in 2018 is scheduled for May 16–20 and should be held as part of the VI Moscow Biennale of Architecture [36] .

In 2015, the 20th exhibition “ARCH Moscow” (May 27–31) had the theme “Architectural Policy” and was devoted to the current trends in Moscow urban planning: the development of territories, renovation of industrial zones, new housing construction, architectural solutions for children [37] . In July of the same year, after the completion of the main events in Moscow, a new special exhibition venue, the Arch Steamboat, was opened. More than 100 architects and employees of the Central House of Artists, headed by Vasily Bychkov, set off on a motor ship along the Volga along the route Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod - Moscow with a visit to Uglich , Tver , Kostroma and Rybinsk . Press conferences, meetings with representatives of city authorities and round tables on three topics: “ Ecology ”, “Architecture. Urban Studies "," Culture. Tourism ” [38] . Two exhibits were displayed on board the ship: the Arch Catalog with the works of leading contemporary architects of the world and Urban Signs - a collection of architectural finds from Russian regions . The steamer entered Uglich, the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery , the Kizhi island , the “village of masters” Mandrogs and completed the journey to St. Petersburg , where they held a conference at the General Staff of the Hermitage [40] .

Special Projects of the Exhibition

Within the framework of the ARCH Moscow exhibition, a number of special projects are taking place reflecting modern trends in the field of architecture and urban planning, devoted to the problems of affordable housing, infrastructure development and the protection of monuments representing modern style, technical and design findings [41] .

  • The “ARCH Catalog” exposition is a presentation of the works of leading Russian architects selected by the expert council of the exhibition. It takes place in two formats: installations on the ground floor of the Central House of Artists (since 2001) and exhibitions on board the “Archives of the Ship” (since 2015) [42] .
  • Competition award "Letter A" for the media, journalists and bloggers who write on architectural topics. It has been taking place since 2017, it was established by the Institute of Modern Urban Studies to draw attention to the problems of the urban environment. The winners of the competition are identified in several categories: “Smart City”, “Smart Quarter”, “Smart and Eco-Buildings”, “Smart Interiors”, “Monuments of Architecture” [43] .
  • The competition of architectural drawing "ArchiGraphics" has been held since 2014 under the auspices of the Sergei Choban Foundation, the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov and the Union of Moscow Architects. Designers, artists, architects and students of relevant educational institutions from the age of 14 are allowed to participate in the competition. The winners are identified in four nominations: drawing from life, architectural fantasy, drawing for the project, special nomination “Moscow - Sense of the city” [44] .
  • International competition of architectural projects using steel structures Steel2Real - held since 2016 among students and graduates of architectural specialties. The purpose of the competition is to draw the attention of aspiring architects to the possibility of using steel structures in civil engineering. Winners are identified in two categories: architectural and engineering [45] .
  • Interdisciplinary student workshop International Building Challenge - held since 2016. The organizers are the National Association of Fachwerk Architecture Researchers and the Saxion University of Applied Sciences. The workshop involves students of architectural, construction, engineering, design and advertising specialties, who are tasked with developing the concept of a specific architectural object. For example, in 2016 it was the Mysovo estate in Dolgoprudny , in 2017 - the buildings of the Trekhgornaya manufactory , and in 2018 - the Picturesque Bridge [46] .
  • Exposition of works of students of children's architectural schools [47] .
  • One Day Design Challenge for Young Designers - held in 2017. The organizer is Roca, a competition dedicated to design projects of bathrooms using 2D and 3D graphics , photography, collage [48] .
  • The Eco_tectonics national award in environmental architecture and construction was founded in 2015, the winners are awarded in five categories: Housing, Commercial and Public Buildings, Open Public Spaces and Public Areas, Interior, and Student project ” [49] .
  • Archiwood Award in the field of wooden architecture - exists since 2010, is awarded to architects, designers and design bureaus for the best wooden structures in several categories: Country House, Public Building, Small Object, Urban Design, Interior ”,“ Wood in decoration ”,“ Restoration ”,“ Art object ”,“ Object design ” [50] .

In the framework of the XXIII exhibition “ARCH Moscow” in 2018, new special projects were announced:

  • Project “12” is a curatorial photo project with portraits of 12 women (architects, designers, decorators). It was announced and will be held for the first time in 2018. Among the participants are Irina Glik, Tatyana Rogova, Irina Dymova, Tatyana Smirnova, Amalia Talfeld, Nadezhda Ananyeva, Anastasia Panibratova [51] .
  • Follow Design Interior Exhibition, curated by American designer David Phoenix [51] .
  • Workshop “Unbearable Renovation” - an exhibition of 218 Moscow houses covered by the renovation program , organized by the Rozhdestvenka architectural bureau and the MARSH architectural school [51] .
  • Экспозиция испанских керамических материалов Tile of Spain , кураторы проекта — торговый и экономический отдел Посольства Испании в России [51] .
  • Экспозиция «До встречи в Венеции!..» — исследование биеннале в Венеции , проходившего с 1980 по 2016 годы [52] .

  • Образовательная площадка BIM ZONE , посвящённая применению технологий информационного моделирования промышленных и гражданских объектов (BIM-технологий) в строительстве [51] .
  • Проект «Возвращение утраченного достоинства среде современных городских кварталов» — проект пешеходноого маршрута от метро «Выхино» до Галереи-мастерской «Выхино» и далее к Музею русской усадебной культуры « Влахернское-Кузьминки » [54] .
  • Экспозиция «Скульптура дома» — устройство индивидуального жилого дома [55] .
  • Выставка «Города N» , отражающая развитие и реконструкции северных городов России, Финляндии и Норвегии . Организатор — журнал «Проект Балтия» [56] .
