History

Near Kunda on Lammasmyagi Hill, which was an island in an ancient lake, the remains of the oldest settlement of an ancient man in Estonia were found (about 10 thousand years ago). In this village, Kunda culture was named, which occupied most of Estonia in the Mesolithic. Fishing accessories of this culture are depicted on the emblem of the city.

The city has been known since the 13th century . Not far from the modern city on the coast are the ruins of Tools .

Until the middle of the XIX century, Kunda remained a small village. In 1870, construction began on one of the largest cement plants in Russia , in 1893 the first industrial power station in Estonia . All this served as the beginning of the development of the village and in 1938 he received the status of a city.

During the period of independence, the city experienced an economic decline and outflow of the population, the cost of housing in some cases fell to a level below cost.
