History
Parish of St. Joseph was canonically founded on August 1, 1956 by Konstantin Bogachevsky , Metropolitan of the UGCC in Philadelphia [1] .
On August 12, 1956 , the first liturgy was held at the premises of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Benedict. The following Sunday, more than 60 families became parishioners at the service, on that day they gave the parish under the protection of St. Joseph the Betrothed [1] .
At the end of 1957, four plots of land were acquired for the construction of a separate church. An area of over 80 acres between the intersection of Cumberland and Foster, and East River Road and Argyle. One acre was allocated directly under the church, the rest of the territory was planned to develop the Ukrainian village [1] .
On April 13, 1958, the consecration of the land took place and the construction of the church premises with the center of religious and social life began. Construction continued for several months, and on November 2, 1958, the church opened to parishioners. The last liturgy in the "old church" was held on March 20, 1977 [1] .
Modern Church
Over time, the number of parishioners grew steadily, and soon it was decided to build a new large church for the Ukrainian diaspora in Chicago [1] .
The construction of the new church officially began on October 1, 1975. Among 32 architects, the project of Zenon Mazurkevich was chosen. On April 6, 1975, Bishop Yaroslav Gabro consecrated a place for construction, and a year later Patriarch Joseph Slipy visited the parish and consecrated the foundation of the church. The modern church takes 8th place in the world among religious buildings with unusual architecture [1] .
On December 26, 1976, Vladyka Yaroslav Gabro consecrated the two cornerstones of the new church. Important documents related to the construction of the church and memorable attributes from Ukraine are embedded between two granite blocks, including a piece of coal from the Donbass and stone from the Dnieper [1] .
