Content
Club career
He began his professional career in 1972 at the Neuss club, where he spent his entire youth career. The following year he moved to Bayer 05 Jürdingen , in which he spent 7 seasons. From 1980 to 1983, he represented the Kaiserslautern team, in which he scored 24 goals in 66 matches. In 1983 he returned to Bayer 05 Jürdingen, where in 1990 he completed his career as a football player.
Coaching career
Coaching career, as well as the career of a football player, began in the club " Neuss ". From 1990 to 1996, Bayer 05 Jürdingen coached (the first season was an assistant coach). In 1996, he headed Duisburg , where he worked for 4 years. The 2000/01 season coached the Hansa . The next season was led by Cologne .
Functional coached Eintracht from 2004 to 2009 [4] . July 1, 2009 the contract was terminated
Together with Erich Ribbek, Friedhelm holds the record for the longest stay at Eintracht - five full seasons.
On October 3, 2009, the Hertha Club announced the appointment of Funkel as the new head coach after the dismissal of Lucien Favre [5] . The contract was not renewed and Friedhelm left the club in 2010 [6] .
On May 22, 2010, Funkhel was named the new Bochum coach. He was fired on September 14, 2011.
September 20, 2011 Funkel was hired as a head coach at Alemania . Funkel was fired on April 1, 2012, after a series of five consecutive defeats. In the club, he reached the mark of three wins, eight draws, and nine defeats in 20 matches [7] .
On September 7, 2013, he was named the new Munich 1860 coach [8] . His first match as a Munich club coach ended with the score 0-0 (against Aalen on September 13, 2013). [9] . On April 2, 2014, Munich 1860 announced that Funkel was planning to leave the club at the end of the season due to “different conceptual views on orientation in sports” [10] . However, the club fired Funkel on April 6, 2014 [11] , losing to Karlsruhe 3-0 [12] in the home game the day before [13] . Having brought statistics in the Munich club to seven wins, eight draws, and nine losses in 24 matches [14] .
Personal life
Has two children. He is the older brother of Wolfgang Funkel .
