Tadeusz Iwanowski ; December 28, 1882 , Winch [2] , Vilna province - June 1, 1970 , Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR ) - Soviet and Lithuanian zoologist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR (1941-1970) Honored Scientist of the Lithuanian SSR (1945).

Biography

Tadas Ivanauskas was born on December 28, 1882 in the farm Winch Vasilishkovsky volost (now - Lida district of Belarus ). In 1908 he graduated from the Sorbonne , and in 1910 - St. Petersburg State University . From 1910 to 1915 he directed the laboratory of visual science aids created by him. In 1914, he founded an expedition to Murmansk and Northern Norway , and in 1917 - on the shores of the Arctic Ocean . From 1919 to 1922 he directed the Station for the Study of Nature organized by him. In 1929 he founded an ornithological station . Tadas Ivanauskas really wanted to create a reserve, and in 1937 his dream came true when he created the увuvinsky Reserve . He was one of the founders of the University of Lithuania in Kaunas. From 1922 to 1940 he served as professor and head of the department of zoology and comparative anatomy of this university. From 1940 to 1956 he headed the Department of Zoology of Vilnius State University , at the same time from 1949 to 1956 he worked at the Department of Forestry of the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture. Tadas Ivanauskas, together with his associates, decided to organize the Institute of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR , where from 1945 to 1950 he served as director. From 1954 to 1970 he worked at the Department of General Biology of the Kaunas Medical Institute, while from 1965 he held the position of head.

Tadas Ivanauskas died on June 1, 1970 in Kaunas . He was buried at the Tabarish cemetery near Kaunas .

Tadas Ivanauskas was born under the name Tadeusz Ivanovsky in the Lebedka estate on the territory of the modern Grodno region of Belarus , into a noble Catholic family. Although Ivanauskas did not know the Lithuanian language until 1905, he considered himself a Lithuanian and devoted his life to the development of science in a newly restored country. In 1918, he opened the first Lithuanian school with his wife. During the Polish-Lithuanian war, there was a significant episode when one of his brothers during the ceasefire handed over the taxonomic collection of Tadas through the front line to Lithuania.

The other three Ivanauskas brothers identified themselves with two other nationalities of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , two ( Jerzy Ivanowski , a politician and engineer and Stanislav Ivanovsky, a lawyer) decided to become Poles, and the politician Vaclav Ivanovsky considered himself a Belarusian.

Perpetuation of memory

  • In 1980, the sculptor Stasis ирirgulis in a ceremonial setting opened a bust-monument of Tadas Ivanauskas in the territory of the Lithuanian Zoo .
  • The Zoological Museum in Kaunas was named after Tadas Ivanauskas.
