Gusher syndrome

Gusher syndrome is a profuse otoliquorrhea , a rare [1] but dangerous complication of manipulation of the stapes [2] .

It comes from the English word “gusher”, which means “powerful oil fountain”.

Gusher syndrome can occur due to increased pressure of perilymph in the inner ear . For example, due to a congenital anomaly, when there is no bone wall between the bottom of the inner auditory canal and the basal curl of the cochlea (fistula between the perilymphatic space of the inner ear and the subarachnoid space of the brain) [3] , the clinical picture masks the fixation of the stapes [1] . Patients are operated on for otosclerosis , with simultaneous stapedectomy , gusher syndrome may occur. Surgeons recommend that you pre-perforate the base of the stapes, so that, with abundant flow of fluid from the inner ear, it is possible to stop the operation in time and close the small defect.
