The 2000 general elections in Venezuela are the presidential and parliamentary elections held on July 30, 2000 , organized in accordance with the country's recently adopted constitution.
The current president, Hugo Chavez, has run for a six-year term under the new Constitution. His main rival was a former ally, governor of the state of Zulia Francisco Arias Cardenas . Chavez easily won the election, having received almost 60% of the vote, surpassing his result in previous elections, losing only to Romulo Gallegos , who gained 74.35% in 1947. Chavez managed to win in almost all states, Arias Cardenas was able to become the first only in his home state of Zulia.
On June 8, 2004, a referendum was announced on August 15 of the same year for the early withdrawal of Chavez from the presidency .

Campaign
The 2000 elections differed from previous campaigns in that they were held under the new Venezuelan Constitution , adopted by the Constitutional Assembly and approved by referendum in December 1999 . It was also unusual that the traditional participants in all elections since 1958 , Democratic Action and KOPEY , still in crisis, this time did not nominate their presidential candidates. A small number of candidates were uncharacteristic for the Venezuelan elections, only three.
The presidential campaign, accompanied by the mutual attacks of the favorites of the election race of Chavez and Arias Cardenas, was characterized by a strong polarization of society, as in 1998 . In many ways, the passion was associated with the proximity of the main contenders for the presidency. Arias Cardenas, like Chavez, was a professional military man. In 1992, he took part in an attempted military coup organized by Hugo Chavez. Subsequently, they parted on the issue of participation in the elections. Arias Cardenas left the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200, created by Chavez, and led the left-wing party Radical Affair, from which he was elected governor of the state of Zulia. Later, he actively supported the election of Chavez as president in 1998 , but then the paths of both politicians diverged again in order to come together again after the 2000 elections.
In the 2000 election, Arias Cardenas positioned himself as a candidate for the whole society, while at the same time blaming his opponent for deviating from the ideals of the Bolivarian revolution. In turn, Chavez promised to continue following the revolutionary path, branding Arias Cardenas as a traitor.
