Cat-fox ( Eng. Cat-fox ) - a possible new species of predators, found on the Indonesian part of Kalimantan Island (Borneo).
The species was first discovered by the WWF- Swiss ecological group in 2003, when camera-traps were used at night in the Kayan Mentarang National Park. This mammal is slightly larger than a domestic cat, with red fur, a long tail and longer hind legs than the front ones. His appearance is a cross between a cat and a fox . A bit like a Foss ( Cryptoprocta ferox ) from Madagascar .
WWF plans to set traps to catch and explore the animal. If it turns out to be a truly new species, it will be the first new predator discovered on Kalimantan since the ferret badgers ( Melogale everetti ) in 1895. Other new mammals found on Kalimantan island relatively recently include the rodent Pithecheirops otion , discovered in 1993, and the bat Myotis gomantongensis , discovered in 1998. Some people believe that the animal in the photos is a famous (but extremely rare) species, Kalimantan civet ( Diplogale hosei ).
Nevertheless, Erik Meijaart ( born Erik Meijaard ), Andrew S. Kitchener ( born Andrew C. Kitchener ) and Chris Smink ( born Chris Smeenk ) in their report published in 2007, suggest that photographed animals cannot they are predators, but they can be related to the flying species of the Aeromys species or the Thomas flying species ( A. thomasi ). Other skeptics claim that this may be the red giant flying squirrel ( Petaurista petaurista ).
