Glory Park (Kherson) is a memorial complex, founded in 1967. It is located south of the park Kherson Fortress, southeast of the Catherine Cathedral . During the foundation of the city, the territory belonged to the Black Sea Admiralty.
History
In 1966, the grave of an unknown soldier who was killed during the liberation of Kherson from the Nazi invaders was found. March 13, 1967 the remains were solemnly reburied. On May 9 of the same year, the Eternal Flame was lit, and a memorial sign was erected over the burial with the words: “Ty Vіchchіnі zhitty vіddav i becoming immortal navіki becoming, Nevdomy hero-soldier.”
The original plan of the memorial included the figure of a bandurist sitting on a barrow, which symbolized the continuity of heroism from the time of the Cossacks, however, the Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR did not approve the project.
The architects of the memorial - V. Gromykhin, S. Zakharov, Yu. Platonov and sculptor S. Znoba - gave the complex unique notes of classicism that are not typical for buildings of this type. The Ionian column, erected on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is crowned with a sculpture of Glory.
The memorial lists include parts of the 49th Guards Rifle Division, Colonel V.F. Margelov and the 295th Rifle Division, under the command of Colonel A.P. Dorofeev, tankmen of Lieutenant General K.V. Sviridov.
On March 13, 1969, in the northern part of the park, a monument to the “Soldiers liberated from grateful Kherson” was erected in the form of a T-34 tank.
