The list of No. 1 singles in the USA in 2016 includes singles who led the main hit parade of North America following the results of each of the weeks of 2016 (data become known in advance, as they are published more than a week before the official publication in the journal). It takes into account the best-selling singles (songs) of US performers, both on physical media ( laser discs , records , cassettes ), and in digital format ( mp3 , video viewing, radio broadcasts, streaming, and others). It is compiled by the editors of the US Billboard, the oldest music magazine, and is therefore called the Billboard Hot 100 (Billboard Magazine 100).
General Information
- On January 2 (the data on the magazine’s website is published in advance) the hit parade was again led by the song “ Hello ” by British singer Adelie , the 8th week in a row. Thus, it exceeded the indicator of the last record holder of the singer - the single “ Rolling in the Deep ”, which spent 7 weeks at the position number 1 in 2011. Thanks to these two hits (“Deep” and “Hello”), Adele became the first British solo performer to have two songs with no less than 7 weeks at the head of the American hit parade. Previously, this achievement among the British had only the famous Four of The Beatles with their hits “ I Want to Hold Your Hand ” (7 weeks No. 1 in 1964) and Hey Jude (9 weeks; 1968). At the same time, the single “Hello” has been in charge of the Radio Songs chart for the 6th week, and previously spent 7 weeks # 1 on Streaming Songs and 5 weeks # 1 on Digital Songs [3] .
- On January 9 and 16, Hello headed the 9th and 10th consecutive weekly charts (as well as 7 weeks # 1 on Digital Songs and 8 weeks # 1 on Radio Songs , and later 11 weeks) [4] [5] .
- On January 23, the hit parade for the first time led to the single " Sorry " by Canadian singer Justin Bieber . Moreover, it happened after 8 weeks of his position at position number 2 (he made his debut there on November 14 with “Hello” in the first place): this record figure previously belonged to the song “The Way You Move” ( OutKast with Sleepy Brown ; 8 weeks Number 2 in 2003-2004). “Sorry” is the 2nd Bieber charttopper in a row after “ What Do You Mean? , Which was number 1 in September 2015. "Sorry" became the 1049th hit number 1 in the entire 57-year history of the American hot parade Hot 100 . At the same time, he heads the charts of Streaming Songs (4 weeks № 1), On-Demand Songs (8 weeks № 1), Rhythmic Songs. Bieber's other song, “ Love Yourself, ” topped the Digital Songs chart [6] .
- On February 13, Justin Bieber replaced himself in the first place: instead of “Sorry”, the hit “ Love Yourself ” climbed to the top. This is only the 12th performer with such an achievement for all 57 years of the Hot 100 chart and the second for 4 months, as recently another Canadian of The Weeknd did the same (“ The Hills ” changed “ Can't Feel My Face ” October 3, 2015 of the year). Earlier, singer Taylor Swift (first among women) had a similar achievement when her hit “Blank Space” changed “Shake It Off” on November 29, 2014. And the first in history were the British Beatles in 1964 (with three consecutive self-shifting hits for number 1: “ I Want to Hold Your Hand ”, “ She Loves You ” and “ Can't Buy Me Love ”); Boyz II Men (1994); Puff Daddy (1997); Ja Rule (2002); Nelly (2002); OutKast (2004); Usher (2004); TI (2008) and Black Eyed Peas (2009). But Puff Daddy and Ja Rule got into this honorary list, each thanks to participating in other hits. "Love Yourself" is the 1050th # 1 hit in the Hot 100 and 3rd for Bieber after "Sorry" and "What Do You Mean?" (Which spent 21 weeks in the top 10) and all from the album Purpose. This made Bieber the first performer with three charttoppers from one disc for the first time after Taylor Swift (“Shake”, “Space” and “Bad Blood” from the album 1989 , 2014-15) and the first man with such an achievement for the first time after another Justin: Justin Timberlake from the FutureSex / LoveSounds album in 2006-07: “ SexyBack ”, “ My Love ” and “ What Goes Around ... Comes Around ” [7] .
- February 20 in the first place of the charts debuted the hit “ Pillowtalk ” by the British singer Zayn (ex- One Direction ), becoming the 25th hit immediately debuting on the top of the chart and the first singer from the UK to immediately debut at No. 1 in the USA with his debut single ( Hot 100), the first debutant among all at the top for the first time after Baauer 's " Harlem Shake " (March 2, 2013), and in total the third Briton who immediately reached the top (after Adele " Hello " in 2015 and Elton John ' s " Candle in the Wind 1997 (“ Something About the Way You Look Tonight ” in 1997). “Pillowtalk” surpassed all past successes of the singles group One Direction (their highest achievement was the second place of the hit “ Best Song Ever ” in 2013). At the same time, Zayn himself repeated the record 45 years ago, becoming the first member of his group to reach the first place of the American charts Hot 100 with his debut single, for the first time after the similar achievement of ex-Beatle George Harrison , who hit “ My Sweet Lord ” / “ Isn't It a Pity was 4 weeks No. 1 in 1970. Other members of their groups who reached the first place, but not with their debut single, are performers such as Bobby Brown (separate from the New Edition ), Michael Jackson ( Jackson 5 ), Ricky Martin ( Menudo ), Donny Osmond ( the Osmonds ), Justin Timberlake ( * NSYNC ) and three other members of the Beatles : John Lennon , Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr [8] .
- On March 5, the hit parade for the first time headed the single “ Work ” by American singer Rihanna (for the 14th time in her career) with the participation of Drake (for the 2nd time in his career). Rihanna in the number of hits No. 1 (14) is behind only The Beatles (20) and Mariah Carey (18) in the USA and is ahead of Michael Jackson (13) and Madonna (12). In the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs chart, the song also became No. 1 (for the 5th time in a singer’s career and for the 14th time in a singer’s career) [9] . He became Rihanna’s 50th hit in the Hot 100 and her 27th hit in the Top-10 (15 for Drake). As a result, Rihanna caught up in the number of Top-10 hits with such singers and singers as Mariah Carey , Janet Jackson and Elton John , sharing 5th place with them [10] . Rihanna scored 27 hits in the top ten Hot 100 for 10 years and 8 months (from “ Pon de Replay ” to “Work”), that is, faster than any of the solo performers before it [11] . Also, “Work” became its 20th hit in the Top-5 (Hot 100), which is the 5th indicator in history along with such stars Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder [12] . Hit Rihanna became the 9th Charttopper in the Hot 100 from an unborn US artist (Rihanna was born in Barbados and Drake in Canada), and the first three weeks of her leadership became the 33rd, 34th and 35th weeks of non-American leadership ( non-US performers in Hot 100. In addition, Rihanna became the first performer in history to lead the Hot 100 with hits from seven consecutive studio albums [13] .
- On April 23, the single “ Work ” by American singer Rihanna was in the lead for the 8th week in a row. Thus, the singer herself reached the second record high of 59 weeks on the top of the American chart (the sum of all of her 14 charttoppers), equaling the legendary British band The Beatles (59 weeks No. 1). The largest number of weeks in the entire history of the American charts was led only by Mariah Carey (her singles were in No. 1 position for 79 weeks). At 4-5 places Boyz II Men group (50 weeks) and Usher bench mark (47 weeks) [14] .
- On April 30, 2016, the single “ Work ” by the American singer Rihanna was in the lead for the 9th week in a row (and 11 weeks # 1 in Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs ), reaching a figure of 60 weeks in the first place in the sum of all her chartpoppers, and bypassing the group The Beatles by this indicator (59). At the same time, the single “ Love Yourself ” spent 22 weeks on the Top-10 Billboard Hot 100 , which was a record figure for all the hits in history that debuted at once in the top ten. Previously, 4 singles at once had the same record level at 21 weeks (by the number of weeks in a row). These are debutants hits among the top ten singles: “ Sorry ” (Justin Bieber, 2015-16), “ What Do You Mean? ”(Justin Bieber, 2015–16),“ Sugar ”( Maroon 5 (2015),“ Starships ”, ( Nicky Minaj , 2012) [15] [16] [17] .
- On May 7, the chart was headed by the hit “ Panda ” of Desiigner and this is the first leader in more than six months representing the USA (previously 41 weeks of the hit parade were headed by musicians born in other countries) [18] . On May 14, Prince returned to the chart posthumously with several of his hits, including for the first time in 22 years he reached the top-10: “ Purple Rain ” (No. 4, and No. 1 in Digital Songs ) and “ When Doves Cry ” (No. 8 ); both songs were in positions No. 2 and No. 1 in 1984. The last hit in the top ten was in Prince with the hit “ The Most Beautiful Girl in the World ” (No. 3 in April 1994. In the digital chart Prince set a record, seven songs in his top eight (top-8), including number 1 ( “Purple Rain”) and No. 2 (“When Doves Cry”). Earlier, five albums also entered the top seven (top-7) of the Billboard 200 chart [19] .
- On May 14, the chart continued to lead the hit “ Panda ” of Desiigner [19] , and the singer Beyonce set a new record. Simultaneously with the debut of her new album Lemonade, Billboard 200 came first [12] , 12 singles from it entered the Billboard Hot 100 song hit parade. In particular, four were in the top twenty: No. 10 (“Formation”), No. 11 (“Sorry”), No. 13 (“Hold Up”), No. 18 (“6 Inch”, with the participation of The Weeknd ). Thus, she became the first singer with so many singles (12) from one album at the same time debuting on the charts, breaking the previous record (11 singles), set on November 13, 2010 by singer Taylor Swift with the album Speak Now . Justin Bieber is in the lead on this indicator among men when, on December 5, 2015, simultaneously with the debut in the first place Billboard 200 of his album Purpose , 17 songs from this disc immediately entered the Hot 100 chart (in second and third places rapper Drake (14) and the Beatles group (14 songs on the chart on April 11, 1964 in the midst of Beatles ’) [21] . On July 2, the single“ Panda ”was in the lead on other charts: 11th week No. 1 on Hot Rap Songs and 9th week No. 1 on Streaming Songs [22] .
- On May 21, the chart topped the rapper Drake single " One Dance " with the participation of Wizkid and Kyla. At the same time, 20 singles at once (including 18 from the new album and 16 debuts) entered the Billboard Hot 100 song hit parade. Including, 11 hit the top-50. 16 debuts is another record for one performer in one week (last record holder Bieber had 13 simultaneous debuts on December 5, 2015). Drake now has 123 hits in the Hot 100, more than Elvis Presley (108), but less than the leader on this indicator, the television series Glee (207 cover versions of various hits) and rapper Lil Wayne (130). But if Glee and Elvis are performing leaders on all their 207 and 108 hits, then rappers are different. Lil Wayne is the leader of only 46 of his total hits hit Hot 100 (35% of all 130), and Drake is the main performer on 78 hits (63%) [23] [24] .
- July 2, in the 6th week of leadership in the “ One Dance ” single charts , singer Drake set several records, as his solo album Views was at the same time 7 weeks in the first place on the Billboard 200 album chart. Drake became the first performer in six months, who managed to lead for 5 weeks simultaneously in the single Hot 100 and the album chart of the Billboard 200 (in December-January, Adele was in the lead for six weeks at the same time with the single “ Hello ” and the album “ 25 ", and only 10 weeks number 1 Of the male singers, the greatest achievement was last more than 10 years ago, when in 2005 the rapper 50 Cent was in the lead for 6 weeks simultaneously with the single “ Candy Shop ” (a total of 9 weeks No. 1) and the album The Massacre (6 weeks No. 1). also, Drake third week headed old chart Songs of the summer , and «one Dance» 7th week lidirova in Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs (by 9) and 9th week led the On-Demand Songs (later 11) [22] . July 2 single « Do not Let Me Down » group The Chainsmokers 9th week led (No. 1) in the Hot Dance / Electronic Songs dance chart (June 23 was 12 weeks of leadership) [22] .
- On July 16, in the 8th week of leadership in the “ One Dance ” single, singer Drake repeated the record, simultaneously leading for two weeks in the United States: Hot 100 and Billboard 200 for 7 weeks in a row. Previously, such an achievement among male singers was only for Michael Jackson (7 weeks № 1, March 5 - April 16, 1983 with the hit " Billie Jean " and the album Thriller ). The last record among women: 12 weeks of simultaneous leadership was at Whitney Houston in 1992 (December 12) -1993 (February 27) with the single " I Will Always Love You " and his "parent" soundtrack The Bodyguard . Among the groups of 12 weeks of leadership in a row and at the same time it was in 1964 (February 15 - May 2) with The Beatles , but with 3 different singles and 2 different albums [25] .
- July 23, in the 9th week of leadership in the “ One Dance ” single chart in the main Hot 100 charts, singer Drake also headed the summer chart of Songs of the Summer for the 6th week, and “One Dance” led the 10th week in Hot R & B / Hip -Hop Songs and the 12th week was the leader in On-Demand Songs (this is the 2nd result after the launch of this chart since 2012 after 13 weeks of leadership from the Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis). At the same time, the former leader of the “ Can't Stop the Feeling! ” Charts ! ”(Justin Timberlake) was in position No. 1 on four charts: Digital Songs (9 weeks No. 1), Radio Songs (5 weeks), Adult Pop Songs airplay (6 weeks) and Adult Contemporary (3 weeks). The other former charttopper single, Panda , by Desiigner, led the charts Streaming Songs (12 weeks) and Hot Rap Songs (14 weeks # 1) [26] .
- On August 6, the chart topped the single " Cheap Thrills " by singer Seah with the participation of Sean Paul . It happened later 23 weeks after debuting at position 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 [27] . The song was for Seya Furler her first charttopper in the USA, and for Sean Paul his fourth (after “ Baby Boy ” -2003, “ Get Busy ” -2003 and “ Temperature ” -2006). Thanks to the single “Cheap Thrills”, Sia Furler (she is 40 years old and 7 months old) became only the fifth woman in the history over the age of 40 who led the Hot 100, after Tina Turner (aged 44 in 1984; “ What's Love Got to Do with It ”), Bette Midler (43; 1989,“ Wind Beneath My Wings ”), Sher (aged 52,“ Believe ”1999) and Madonna (42, 2000,“ Music ”). Apart from the full duo of Aretha Franklin (at 45, with George Michael , "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me", 1987) [27] . At the same time, Sia is the first singer at that age after Midler, who is for the first time at position No. 1, and her duet with Sean Paul, the first mixed-sex singing couple, in which both are over 40 and they are on top of the chart after the duet of Bill Medley (47) and Jennifer Warns (40) (1987, “ (I've Had) The Time of My Life ”), ... and the first duet or trio (where everyone is over 40), for the first time after “All For Love” (1994), where Rod Stewart sang (he was 49 then), Sting (42) and Bryan Adams (36) ... The first was Louis Armstrong, in 1964, with the song “Hello Dolly” in the number 1 position in the USA [28] . "Cheap Thrills" 4 weeks headed the chart [29] .
- On September 3, the chart topped the single " Closer " by The Chainsmokers with the participation of Halsey [30] . By October 22, he was at the top of the US charts for 8 weeks and at the same time heading all the main components of the Hot 100 chart (digital Digital Song Sales, Streaming Songs, Radio Songs), as well as the On-Demand Songs audio subscription. This happened for the first time after the same multi-chart song “ Uptown Funk! "( Mark Ronson + Bruno Mars ), who led 8 weeks on these charts in February-April 2015. Closer also led the Billboard Hot Dance / Electronic Songs charts (8 weeks) and radio air Pop Songs (3 weeks) [31] . By October 29, he was 9 weeks on top of the US charts Hot 100 and 3 weeks at the same time heading all the main components of the Hot 100 chart, and 10 weeks heading On-Demand Songs. Among the duets of 9 or more weeks on top of the Hot 100 were OutKast (" Hey Ya! ”, 2003-04); Los Del Rio (“ Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix) ”, 14 weeks No. 1 in 1996). (This does not include pairs of singers who are not recorded regularly together, for example, the duet of singers Brandy + Monica , whose hit " The Boy Is Mine " was in the lead for 13 weeks in 1998, or the duo Diana Ross + Lionel Richie , whose hit " Endless Love " was in the lead for 9 weeks in 1981 [32] . By November 19, "Closer" 12 weeks was at the top of the US charts Hot 100 (becoming the 17th hit out of 1057 all chartpoppers for all 58 years of the hit parade history, staying at the top for at least 12 weeks), and also 13 weeks heading Digital Digital Sales, 12 weeks heading streaming songs Streaming and 6 weeks # 1 on Radio Broadcasting Songs (later extending leadership to 9 weeks); and also 6 weeks at the same time leading all the main components of the Hot 100 chart (Digital Song Sales, Streaming Songs and Radio Songs), and additionally headed the Billboard's Hot Dance / Electronic Songs (12 weeks; 12 weeks later) and Pop Songs (11 weeks) [33] [34] [35] .
- On November 26, the chart topped the single “ Black Beatles ” by black performers Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane . Thanks to this name, the legendary British band “ Beatles ” (who had hot 100 100 records in 1964–70, from “ I Want to Hold Your Hand ” to “ The Long and Winding Road ”) became the first in the stories of the performer, in which they themselves and the name of their group were in the first place of the American charts. The Rolling Stones group (which had 8 Charttoppers in the USA) deserves a special mention here, since the name of their frontman Mick Jagger sounded in the first place of the chart thanks to the hit “ Moves Like Jagger ” performed by the group Maroon 5 (with the participation of Christina Aguilera ) [ 36] .
