Biography
Grandson of Georg Friedrich Grothefheend , philologist , orientalist , researcher of antiquities, who laid the foundations for the decoding of ancient Persian cuneiform writing. The son of an archaeologist , numismatist , historian Karl Ludwig Grothefend .
In 1864-1870 he studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Gottingen , then historical sciences. After receiving his doctorate in 1870, he worked at the Royal State Archives in Breslau . From there, in 1874 he moved to Aurich , and in 1876 to Frankfurt , where he worked as an archivist, and in 1887 he headed the Schwerin Main Archive (Privy Council of Archives). He worked as a leader until 1921.
In 1891, he published in Hanover the classic historical work The Guide to Historical Chronology (Taschenbuch der Zeitrechnung des deutschen Mittelalters und der Neuzeitfrom the German Middle Ages to the New Age, which is an indispensable tool of historical auxiliary sciences to this day, and which, usually just called "Grotefend" by the name of its author. In 2007, its 14th edition was published. In 1898-1928, under his editorship, 6 editions of the Handbook on the Chronology of the German Middle Ages and the New Age were published.
