Session musician ( English session musician , also a studio musician ) - a musician who is hired to participate in recording music in the studio, and at the same time he is not a permanent member of the musical ensemble with which he is recorded [1] [2] .
Typically, session musicians themselves do not become famous, although there are exceptions to the studio band The Wrecking Crew .
One of the important qualities for a session musician is universality, since they can be invited to work in various conditions and genres. Usually, session musicians are expected to learn their parts quickly, and that they can read notes or chord diagrams (or the Nashville digital system in the case of country music) and improvise.
Session musicians are used in any situation where people with musical skills are needed on a short-term basis.
Typically, session musicians are used by recording studios to accompany other musicians when recording in the studio and at live performances, to record music for commercials, film and television, and theater productions. Sometimes the same group of studio musicians (for example, a rhythm section) is used repeatedly, in many sessions.
The terms “session musician” and “studio musician” are currently synonymous, although in the past decades the second term has more often been applied to musicians who have worked continuously for a particular record company, recording studio, or agency.
