Story
The first story about a magical nanny begins with a description of the unsettled life of the Banks family, where the not-too-successful head of the family together with his wife can not cope with the children. Banks hire nannies one by one, but these attempts fail until a mysterious young lady with decisive manners takes up a responsible post in the house [2] .
The image of a heroine
Pamela Travers created the image of the "ideal nanny" [3] . Mary Poppins is a young woman of a somewhat peculiar appearance (“The stranger was thin, with large arms and legs and rather small, piercing blue eyes ”). She is distinguished by accuracy and fine manners; Mary Poppins shoes are always polished, the apron is starched, the aroma of “Tan” soap and toasts comes from it. All the heroine’s property consists of an umbrella and a large carpet (tapestry) bag. She knows how to create adventures from nothing: from the most ordinary objects and under the most ordinary conditions, which makes one think about her descent from magicians. Mary Poppins taught her pupils the two most important things in life: the ability to see the fabulous in ordinary things and not be afraid of any changes [4] . With all this, she asks for the smallest salary for her services. There are secrets in Mary's life: she has innumerable relatives with a magic bias, is friends with a certain Mrs. Corry, old as light guards, and is clearly not indifferent to the young match-artist Bert.
Mary Poppins moves in a very original way - downwind, which the legendary nanny herself calls the "wind of change":
“Then the silhouette, bending and swaying under the blows of the wind, opened the gate, and the children saw that it belonged to a woman. With one hand she held the hat, in the other she dragged a large bag. And suddenly - Michael and Jane did not believe their eyes - as soon as the woman entered the kindergarten, she took to the air and flew straight to the house! Yes, it was like the wind first brought it to the gate, waited for it to open, and then brought it directly to the front door. The whole house trembled when she landed! ”

Mary Poppins is strict, and her severity, however, is equally easily accepted by both pupils and parents of children.
“Michael, as he was stunned, frowned and began to protest:“ I do not want to! I don't need to! I will not! “But Mary Poppins did not take her eyes off him, and suddenly Michael felt that it was impossible to look at Mary Poppins and not obey. There was something strange and unusual in it, which made it scary and fun! The spoon moved even closer. Michael took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and swallowed. "

“Mary Poppins looked at her in surprise. “Decent people, madame,” she objected, “always provide every second Thursday, and from one to six.” I will agree to the same conditions, or ... “- she paused, and Mrs. Banks immediately realized what exactly this pause meant. And she meant that if Mary Poppins didn’t get what she wanted, she would not stay here for more than a minute. ”

Mary Poppins in Everyday Life
The name of the famous English nanny has become a household name. So traditionally called good nannies and teachers, because, despite the external, ostentatious severity, stiffness and arrogance, Mary Poppins is a woman with a very kind and gentle heart and soul, ready to forgive minor, frivolous errors to her pupils. Mary sincerely loves all her pupils, takes care of them and is ready, if necessary, to “stand up” for them (which is clearly seen in the chapter “Miss Andrew Lark” of the book “Mary Poppins Returns”) [6] . In honor of the heroine of books, Pamela Travers names services and agencies for hiring nannies [7] [8] , teacher competitions [9] , children's entertainment complexes [10] , pastry shops and cafes [11] , a brand of fashionable women’s clothing [12] and style in clothes [13] .
