History

With the reduction of the state military order for the Ukrainian armed forces in the 1990s, Kharkov enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex developed modernization programs for the T-54 , T-55 , T-62 and Type 59 tanks [3] . One of the developed options for the modernization of Soviet tanks was the scheme of modernization of the T-62 tank to the T-62-5TDF level, developed by the Kharkov Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering named after A. A. Morozov and the plant named after Malyshev, which was completed in 2002 and offered to foreign customers.

In mid-2009, the modernization of T-62 tanks to the T-62-5TDF level was proposed to the military-political leadership of Egypt and after the completion of the tender on December 14, 2009, the Egyptian Ministry of Military Industry signed a contract with the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukrspetsexport on the modernization of 200 T tanks -62 Egyptian army, the execution of the contract was assigned to the plant named after Malyshev [4] . The implementation of the contract began in July 2010, it was planned to supply the first batch of modernized equipment to the Egyptian side in mid-2011 [5] . In addition to the modernization of tanks, the contract provided for the transfer of technology to the Egyptian side (the recipients of which were the Abu Zaabal tank repair plant and Kader plant), however, the events of the Arab Spring that began in 2010, as well as the political crisis and the ensuing after him a change of government in Egypt in early 2011 made the execution of the contract impossible (one of the charges against Egyptian President H. Mubarak was the illegal enrichment of the family and relatives of the president on the price difference of weapons purchased by Egypt) [6] .

On December 3, 2018, at the EDEX-2018 arms exhibition in Cairo, Ukroboronprom Group of Companies proposed a new version of the remotorization of T-62 tanks of foreign customers, on which it was proposed to install Ukrainian-made 6TD-2 diesel engines [7] .

Description

In the course of the modernization program, the T-62 tanks were to undergo modernization of the power compartment (with the installation of a new 5TDF tank engine with a capacity of 700 hp and coaxial gearboxes connected with it), modernization of protection with the installation of additional armor plates on the front of the hull and turret and the installation of built-in dynamic protection), as well as the modernization of the main armament (replacing the 115 mm 2A20 gun with a 120 mm or 125 mm gun) and a fire control system [1] .
