Timothy ( dr. Greek Τιμόθεος ; end of the 6th century - first half of the 7th century ) - presbyter of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople , church writer.
Almost nothing is known about his life. It is only known composition of this author entitled «Τιμοθέου πρεσβυτέρου τῆς άγιωτάτης μεγάλης ἐκκλησίας Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, πρός Ιωάννην πρεσβύτερον τῆς άγιωτάτης τοῦ θεοῦ καθολικῆς ἐκκλησίας, καί σκευοφύλακα τῆς ἀγίας Θεοτόκα τῆς ἐν τοῖς Χαλκοπρατείοις περί διαφοράς τῶν προσερχόμενων τῆ εὐαγεστάτη ημών πίστει.» ( «Timothy elder, the Most Holy and Great Churches of Constantinople: John the Presbyter of the Holy, Divine, Catholic Church and the Scevophilax of the Holy Virgin in Chalkopatria. About the difference coming to our immaculate faith ”). This work presents a heresiological treatise, which describes heresies and is divided into three categories. The first category is heretics who must be accepted through Baptism, the second are heretics accepted through anointing, the third are heretics accepted through the curse of heresy. As the name implies, the work was written for the priest and the skevophilax of the Church of the Holy Virgin in Chalkopatria . The exact date of the writing of the treatise is unknown, but from the contents of the work it is clear that it was written after the Second Council of Constantinople in 553 . The treatise of Timothy mentions the work of John Philopon "On the Resurrection," written in 560. For this reason, the time of writing the essay by Timothy dates back to the end of the 6th century or the beginning of the 7th century .
Timofey's work was translated into Old Russian from Greek quite a long time ago, in the pre-Mongol period, until the middle of the 13th century . This work was included in the composition of the helmsman books . An excerpt from the book of Timothy Nikon Montenegro included in his book "Pandects . " In 1650, this passage of Timofey’s book from the Pandeks was printed in Church Slavonic in Moscow; it became part of the so-called Joseph Kormchi as chapter 70.
In the original language, the essay was first published by Johannes Meurzius in Leiden in 1619 , the work of Timothy was published in 86 volumes of Greek Patrology .
