Origin

Guy Papyriy belonged to the plebeian clan Papiriev , and his father bore the same name . The first known history of Papyri Carbon reached praetra in 168 BC. e. and became the father of two sons: Gaius (the first in the history of the clan consul, who held this position in 120 BC) and Gnei , consul 113 years BC e. Each of these two had a son, Guy, who had gone through a career before the praeture [1] , one of which was the praetor’s father 62 years BC. e.: either the son of Gaius , who was nicknamed Arvin and died in 82 BC. e., or the son of Guy , who died in the year 80. Accordingly, the most prominent representative of this family, Gnei Papiri Carbon , the leader of the Marian party and a three-time consul, belonged to Guy Jr., either his relatives or cousin's uncle. Guy's mother's name was Rubria, and she, apparently, came from an unnamed family [2] .

Biography

The name Guy Papyrii was established by antiquologists thanks to inscriptions on coins minted in Bithynia [3] ; Valery Maxim calls this nobleman Gnei [4] , which is a clear mistake [3] . In 67 BC e. Carbon served as a tribune for the people [5] . In this capacity, he brought to trial the court of Marcus Aurelius Cottu , consul 74 years BC. e., on charges of abuse of power in Hercules of Pontus and appropriation of prey during the Third Mithridates War . Dion Cassius in connection with the events of this year reports on three trials in which Carbon and Cotta alternately acted as the prosecutor and the accused [6] . According to Memnon , the main prosecutor in the trial of Marcus Aurelius was a resident of Heraclea Frasimed, while Carbon acted in the background, but in historiography it is assumed that it was the popular tribunes that delivered the main accusatory speech, for which he received a reward from the Heracles. In the end, Marcus Aurelius was convicted [3] .

In 62 BC e. Guy Papyrius was a praetor [7] . Subsequently, until 59 BC. e. he ruled the provinces of Bithynia and Pontus with the authority of a prophet ; coins with his name were minted in the cities of Amis , Nicaea , Nicomedia , Apamea [8] [9] . During governorship, he was involved in abuse, and this took advantage of the son of Marcus Aurelius Cotta, also Mark . This young man initiated a lawsuit against Gaius Papiry on the very day when he put on a man’s toga and obtained a guilty verdict [4] [2] .

Mark Tullius Cicero in one of the letters called Guy Papyria his friend [10] . This letter is dated October 46 BC. e., and it is unclear whether then Carbon was still alive [2] .

Descendants

Guy Papiria had a son of the same name , who served as a quaestor in the period up to 20 BC. e. [one]
