Yury Nikolaevich Kalachnikov ( April 11, 1928 , Kungur - October 4, 1998 ) - Soviet artillery systems designer. Winner of the Lenin Prize and State Prize of the USSR.

Biography
At the age of 15 he entered the Leningrad Mechanical Institute , graduated in 1949 .
In 1949 - 1950 - engineer-technologist at the Gorky Machine-Building Plant .
From November 1950, he worked in the special design bureau of the Perm Machine-Building Plant (now OJSC Motovilikhinsky Plants ):
- Head of Design Department ( 1955 )
- Deputy Chief Designer ( 1963 ),
- chief designer of the plant ( 1965 ).
In 1966, by order of the Minister of Defense Industry, a special design bureau (SKB) was formed at the plant, Yu. N. Kalachnikov was appointed its head. Advisor to the General Director ( 1995 ).
Combined the main work with the scientific and teaching activities in Perm State Technical University , a professor in the department of design and production of automatic machines. Author of many inventions.
Developments
Under the guidance and with the direct participation of Yu.N. Kalachnikov, an experimental design bureau and production base were created, over 150 research and development works were completed, 20 were created and 12 defense items were put into service, including:
- The artillery unit of the 240-mm self-propelled mortar 2S4 "Tulip" ( 1972 ) was developed. For the first time in artillery, a construction of a base plate of a mortar was developed, providing the possibility of transferring a mortar to a combat position and firing without first preparing the firing position.
- 152-mm towed gun 2A36 "Hyacinth-B" ( 1979 ) and its version - part of the artillery 2A37 for self-propelled gun 2S5 "Hyacinth-C" ( 1976 ).
- The family of 120-mm artillery guns "Nona": a 2A51 gun (artillery unit) for self-propelled gun 2S9 "Nona-S" ( 1981 ), a 120-mm towed gun 2B16 "Nona-K" ( 1986 ), a 120-mm gun 2A60 for self-propelled gun 2S23 "Nona-SVK" (together with the Central Research Institute "Burevestnik") ( 1990 ).
- Combat and transport-charging machines of the Uragan ( 1976 ) and Smerch volley-fire systems ( 1986 ).
- The artillery unit of the combat and transport-loading vehicle of the TOS-1 Buratino heavy flame-thrower system.
The artillery armaments created under the direction of Yu. N. Kalachnikov are distinguished by a high degree of automation of the processes of preparation for firing, ensuring the maximum rate of fire of the weapon.
Awards and titles
- He was awarded the Order of Lenin , two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor , medals.
- Winner of the Lenin Prize ( 1987 ) and the State Prize of the USSR ( 1978 ).
- Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, full member of the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences ( RARAN ) ( 1993 ).
Memory
- In honor of Yu.N. Kalachnikov, on August 30, 2001, a memorial plaque was installed in Perm .
