History

Mstislav the Great after the death of his father (1125) received only the neighborhood of Kiev. His son Vsevolod reigned in Novgorod. In the rest of the Russian lands reigned their own dynasties or younger Monomakh. After the capture of Chernigov by Vsevolod Olgovich, his uncle Yaroslav Svyatoslavich Mstislav received Kursk for non-intervention, where he planted his son Izyaslav. In connection with the campaign of 1127 Rostislav Mstislavich was first mentioned as the prince of Smolensk, while during the campaigns against Gleb of Minsk (1117-1119) (before the death of Svyatopolchich in Turov) the prince of Smolensk was Vyacheslav Vladimirovich.

The chronicle does not indicate the causes of the Polotsk campaign, but describes it in detail.

  1. Turov, Volyn, gorodensky and gnocchi detachments besieged Izyaslavl .
  2. Chernihiv-Seversky detachments were sent under Strezhev .
  3. Kiev voivod Ivan Vyshatich with black hoods to Borisov .
  4. Smolensk detachment under the Drutsk .

The invasion was scheduled simultaneously from all directions in August. Izyaslav Mstislavich Kursky came under Logoysk a day earlier than planned, captured Bryachislav Davydovich and joined the group besieging Izyaslavl.

Then the Novgorod army led by Vsevolod Mstyslavych entered the Polotsk land, and then the Polotsk Veche decided to expel Davyd and accept Rogvolod.

Implications

Probably, Rogvolod Vseslavich, in the absence of outside support, could not hold on to power, and Davyd returned to the Polotsk reign. Then in 1130, Mstislav the Great sent the Polotsk princes, including his son-in-law Bryachislav Davydovich, to Byzantium, and in Polotsk he planted his son Izyaslav. Davyd Vseslavich did not return from the link; he probably died in exile.

In 1132, after the death of Mstislav the Great and the beginning of the struggle of the younger Monomakhs with the Mstislavichs, Vasylko Svyatoslavich returned to Polotsk. Further in Polotsk, until the entry into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the descendants of Vseslav Brjachislavich reigned.
