Biography
Born on August 28, 1838 in Antwerp . From childhood, he was interested in the study of plants. He studied at the Jesuit school in Alst , then - at the Royal Athenaeum. Since 1858, Van Hurk, together with de Becker, began a systematic study of the flora of the environs of Antwerp, and subsequently they together founded the Antwerp Herb Society. In 1859, Van Herck began an independent study of diatoms.
In 1861, Van Herck went to Bonn , where he studied with Professor German Schacht plant anatomy and the technique of creating micropreparations.
Since 1867, Van Hurk taught chemistry at a school in Antwerp. In 1869, Van Herck became an honorary doctor at Rostock University . Since 1877, he was the director of the Antwerp Botanical Garden.
In 1882, Van Herck first used electric light to work with a microscope. In 1891, he organized the International Microphotography Exhibition at the Royal Athenaeum.
He died on March 13, 1909 . Two days later, his latest work on diatoms, Diatomées de l'Expédition antartique Belge , was published.
