Belgian musician and producer Dirk Serrias was born and raised in Antwerp. He started recording music in the late 80s and for these purposes he took the pseudonym Vidna Obmana, which in Serbian means “optical illusion”, a term that very well fits Dirk’s music. At first, his works were experimental noise compositions, but already at the turn of the 80s and 90s, his style began to change rapidly towards an almost isolationist ambient aesthetics, exploring the themes of calm, loneliness and grief.
Dirk released his first few discs on his own until his first official album, Ending Mirage, was released on American ND Records. He was enthusiastically received by critics as one of the best examples of post-classical experimental electronic music. From this moment on, Vidna Obmana albums are released quite often. Recently, Dirk began to introduce a rhythmic pattern into his meditative textures, as a rule, collaborating with some percussionist. Moreover, he often returns to his early minimalist experiments, which creates difficulties in determining whether this or that composition belongs to a particular stage of creativity. As if to create even more confusion, a lot of collections of early and unpublished things by Vidna Obmana have appeared recently. Also, recently Dirk has been working a lot in joint projects.
