Lebedev, Peter Ivanovich

He was born on August 11 ( 23 ), 1885 in the town of Piryatin, Poltava Province, in the family of a gymnasium teacher. In 1904 he graduated from high school in Omsk.

From 1904 to 1909 he studied at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute .

In 1912 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of St. Petersburg University. In 1934, P. I. Lebedev was awarded the degree of Doctor of Geological Sciences in the aggregate of his work - without defending a dissertation. In the period from 1913 to 1914 he worked as a keeper of the Mineralogy cabinet at the North Caucasus University of Rostov-on-Don. Subsequently, from 1920 to 1923 he was dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, rector, member of the Board of the North Caucasus State University. Here he also taught the courses “Genesis of Minerals” and “Fundamentals of Physicochemical Crystallography”.

From 1929 to 1931 he worked at the Leningrad Mining Institute - he gave lectures on mineralogy, in 1936-1937 he gave a course of lectures on petrography at the Moscow Petroleum Institute.

In 1934-1935 he worked as deputy director of the Petrographic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1935-1936 - as deputy chairman of the Geological Group of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1936-1937 he worked as head of the Geological Sector and deputy. Chairman of the Far Eastern Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Since January 29, 1939, he has been a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, specializing in petrology, mineralogy, and biochemistry. Department of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

After World War II, from 1945 to 1948, P.I. Lebedev worked as head. Department of Mineralogy and Geochemistry, Institute of Geological Sciences, USSR Academy of Sciences, taught at Rostov State University - lectured in geochemistry at the geological and soil department of the university in Rostov-on-Don. In 1945 he headed the great Caucasian expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Lebedev's works relate to various questions of descriptive, theoretical, and experimental petrography, mineralogy, geochemistry, and the study of minerals. He experimentally studied mineral formation in some silicate schemes, the behavior of sulfides in alloys with silicates, and made conclusions about the conditions for the formation of sulfide ore deposits. Lebedev conducted field research in Karelia, the Caucasus and Transcaucasia, Ukraine, the Kuznetsk Alatau, Altai and the Far East. Among the Caucasian works, a monograph on the Alagaz volcano is distinguished, in which the history of its formation is considered and the rocks of the region are described. Lebedev's research in the Kuznetsk Alatau and work in the Far East played a significant role in expanding the ore base in the east of the USSR.

Pyotr Ivanovich Lebedev died on May 3, 1948 in Moscow.
