Post and Postmark History of the Democratic Republic of Congo

The history of postal and postal stamps of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , a state in Central Africa with its capital in Kinshasa , describes the development of postal services in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formerly the Belgian Congo and Zaire .

Colonial period

The free state of the Congo was created in 1885 on the personal initiative of the King of Belgium Leopold II [≡] and was officially annexed, becoming the Belgian Congo in 1907. Both of these formations produced their own brands, including the , created by Dutch artists and Pete van Engelen ( niderl. Piet van Engelen ) [≡] .

Republic of the Congo

In 1960, the Belgian Congo became an independent Republic of the Congo , with commemorative stamps [≡] to mark it .

Katanga

The state of Katanga separated from the Republic of the Congo and for three years of independence issued its own postage stamps and issues with overprints on postage stamps of the Belgian Congo and the Republic of the Congo.

South Kasai

For a short time in 1960–1961, the South Kasai was a separatist region in the south of the central part of the country, which overprinted Belgian Congo stamps.

Zaire’s first postage stamps were issued on December 18, 1971. [1]

Democratic Republic of Congo

Parcel labels were issued in the Belgian Congo in the period 1887-1892.

Issues of Indian troops in the Congo

The UN troops stationed in 1962 in the Republic of the Congo included the Indian contingent, whose servicemen used the postage stamps of India with the English imprint to pay for the forwarding of their correspondence . “UN FORCE (INDIA).
