General Information
“Iron Man” in Germany is called the ancient, vertically protruding from the ground rectangular cast - iron beam, located in the forest Kotenforst ( German Kottenforst ). This forest area now belongs to the southeastern part of the Rhineland Nature Park ( German Rheinland ), located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia .
Geometry
The beam is a rectangular parallelepiped with a total height of about 2.18 meters and uneven sides of approximately 21 × 10 cm. The height of the overhanging part is about 118 cm. 1] .
Manufacturing Technology
Studies of the timber, conducted in 1970, made it possible to conclude that, contrary to the popular name, it was not made of iron, but a cast-iron casting, made in clay form in the form of an open trench. It is known that such technologies were common in this area at the end of the Middle Ages - the beginning of the new time [2] .
History
In historical documents, timber was first mentioned in 1625. He played the role of one of the boundary orientations of the lands of Alfter ( German Alfter ) and Heimerzheim ( German Heimerzheim ), now it is Swisttal , being close to the remains of a Roman aqueduct . Later sources from 1717 confirmed this feature. However, in 1727 the cast-iron bar was moved to the place of its modern location. This was done as part of a general redevelopment of the locality, in particular, within the framework of linking the position of the Iron Man with the system of new local roads and the Augustusburg castle in Brühl [1] .
The origin and initial purpose of “Iron Man” still do not have a generally accepted explanation. For this reason, various legends and speculations continue to exist. For example, one of the legends refers the creation of this bar to the times of the Roman Empire , and the other claims that it is made of meteoric iron [1] .
Current State
"Iron Man" is one of the unique historical sites of Central Europe . Its interesting feature is the practical absence of rust traces in the presence of signs of wind erosion [2] .
Currently, the location of the "Iron Man" is very popular during various local festivals and tourist excursions [1] .
