BMG Entertainment (where BMG is short for Bertelsmann Music Group ) is a multinational company [1] .
It was a music and entertainment division (subsidiary) of the German media company Bertelsmann AG [2] [3] [4] [5] (for 1996 the third largest media company in the world) [6] .
BMG Entertainment had offices around the world [7] , with a head office (headquarters) in New York [8] .
The company was one of the largest entertainment companies in the world [6] . According to Billboard magazine in August 1998, the company's annual turnover was $ 4.4 billion. According to her own data, she owned 200 music labels in more than 50 countries of the world [7] (in particular, in 1979 she bought the label Arista Records ) [2] . As of December 2000, the annual turnover was $ 4.7 billion [2] .
As reported in 2004, the company then owned more than 200 music labels in 54 countries. Among its assets: Arista Records, BMG Music Canada, BMG Classics, BMG Direct, BMG Distribution, BMG Music Publishing, BMG Special Products, RCA Music Group, RCA Label Group Nashville, Windham Hill Group [8] .
From 1988 to 1998, BMG Music, together with Warner Music Group , EMI , Sony Music , Universal Music Group and PolyGram, was one of the six so-called major labels (the world's leading record companies, which together account for the lion's share of the music market). In 1998, when PolyGram was acquired by the Universal Music Group, it became one of five. In 2004, BMG and Sony Music Entertainment merged into Sony BMG [8] (in which Sony and Bertelsmann each had 50% each).
In 2009, BMG and Sony parted ways [8] . Bertelsmann sold Sony its half to Sony BMG, and Sony BMG was renamed back to Sony Music Entertainment.
Now this reformed company Sony Music Entertainment has remained one of only four major labels in the world: Sony Music Entertainment , EMI , Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group (the largest of them is Universal Music Group) [8] .
