Biography

Peugeot was called up for military service in 1913, before that he worked as a school teacher. The place of service was the 6th company of the 44th regiment of the 27th infantry brigade of the 14th infantry division. At the time of the mobilization of the French troops ( August 2 ) he had the rank of corporal.

On the day of mobilization, on August 2, Peugeot followed his group from the 6th company from Lons-le-Saunier with the aim of establishing control over the Franco-German border. The day before, German troops had been mobilized, and in the early morning of August 2, the German cavalry patrol of the 5th regiment of horse rangers under the command of Lieutenant Albert Mayer left Mulhouse ( Alsace ) and crossed the Franco-German border, and Mayer himself saber cut down the sentry who tried to stop Germans. At 9:30, Peugeot and his colleagues had breakfast in the house of a certain Mr. Ducure, when the owner's daughter, Nicolet, rushed into the house and said that German soldiers had appeared in the city.

At 9:50, Peugeot saw Mayer and demanded that he stop, but the German shot Peugeot. The bullet went into the shoulder, and the Frenchman fell, firing a pistol at Mayer in response and missing. Co-workers opened fire on the German patrol: Mayer was killed, injured in the head and stomach. At 10:07 (according to other sources, at 10:37) Peugeot died on the doorstep of the house, becoming the first French soldier to die in the First World War (the last victim was Augustine Trebucion ).

A monument to Peugeot was erected in Zhonsheri.
