Amateur career

Cuba Championship 2000

He played in the middle weight class (up to 75 kg). In the 1/8 finals defeated Alexis Moreau. In the quarterfinal lost to Jorge Gutierrez [1] .

In November 2000, he became the world champion among young people in the weight category up to 75 kg [2] .

2001 Cuba Championship

He played in the weight category up to 71 kg. In the 1/16 finals defeated Anibal Rodriguez. In the 1/8 finals defeated Daniel Hurtado. In the quarterfinal lost to Pedro Valdés [3] .

2002 Cuba Championship

He played in the middle weight class (up to 76 kg). In the 1/8 finals defeated Otani Suarez. In the quarter finals defeated Glendis Hernandez. In the semifinals, lost to Manuel Drake [4] . Became a bronze medalist.

2003 Cuba Championship

He played in the middle weight class (up to 75 kg). In 1/16 finals defeated Yusiel Napoles . In 1/8 finals defeated Yudiel Napoles. In the quarterfinals won Gerardo Castano. In the semifinals, he lost to Jurisander Aguilar [5] . For the second year in a row I won the bronze of the national championship.

Professional career

He made his debut in the professional ring on August 21, 2009, having won by technical knockout in the first round [6] .

April 16, 2011 won on points former contender for the world title at light heavyweight Colombian Epifanio Mendoza [7] .

On June 24, 2011, he knocked out Colombian Frank Paines in the 2nd round and won the interim WBO Latino and WBA Fedelatin titles at light heavyweight [8] [9] .

January 30, 2015 knocked out in the 4th round of ex-world champion in the second middleweight American Jeff Lacy [10] .

July 25, 2015 was to meet with Russian Vasily Lepikhin . However, Lepikhin suffered a back injury and was unable to enter the ring [11] [12] . Instead, Barrera’s rival was Frenchman Akim Zulikha. The Cuban won an early victory in the 8th round [13] [14] .

In August 2015, the IBF sanctioned a fight for the status of a mandatory contender for the world heavyweight champion title between Barrera and Russian Artur Beterbiev [15] . Bidding for the right to organize this battle was scheduled for October 5 [16] . Bidding did not take place, as the company Main Events (promoter Sullivan) removed her boxer from the battlefield. The reason was that the fight was to be held in Canada, and Barrera had no right to leave the territory of the United States [17] .

Fight with Karo Murat

December 12, 2015 knocked out in the 5th round of the former contender for the world title in light heavyweight German Karo Murat . The fight had IBF qualifying status. Cuban became a mandatory challenger [18] [19] .

Fight Andre Ward

At the end of 2015 - the beginning of 2016, it was reported that Barrera could hold a rating fight against the former world middleweight champion Andre Lude Ward [20] [21] [22] . On January 28, the fight was officially announced. The fight was scheduled for March 26 [23] [24] . The fight, which took place in Auckland (USA), ended with the victory of Ward by a unanimous decision of the judges with a score of 117–109, 119–109, 117-108 [25] .

December 16, 2016 knocked out in the 7th round by Ukrainian Vyacheslav Shabransky [26] [27] .

July 15, 2017 won on points American Joe Smith Jr. [28] [29] .

Championship fight with Dmitry Bivol

In December 2017, it was announced that on March 3, 2018, Sullivan will meet with WBA light heavyweight world champion Russian Dmitry Bivol [30] [31] . Bivol controlled the course of the battle and Barrera had little work. In the 12th round, the Russian sent the Cuban in a knockout [32] [33] .

In May 2019, he signed a contract with the Top Rank Promotions promotion company [34] [35] .
