Biography

Born in Kharkov in the family of a lawyer. Received a brilliant education. From childhood, he was distinguished by rare musical abilities, which allowed him to enroll and successfully graduate from the Gnessin School in Moscow in piano. His classmate was an outstanding Soviet composer Tikhon Nikolaevich Khrennikov. The repertoire was dominated by the works of S.V. Rachmaninov and F. Chopin. However, the musician’s career did not work out: as a result of medical intervention after an accident, his legs were taken away, which did not allow him to engage in concert activities. After graduating from the Gnesinka, Rafail Ilyich entered the physics department of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. Already a student at Moscow State University, he participates in the First All-Union Competition of Performing Musicians in 1933 and becomes his diploma student. Having successfully graduated from Moscow University, in 1938 he began working at TsAGI. in the group of the general structure A.N. Tupolev.
