Geography

The city dominates the western part of Al-Mahvit governorate and the southern part of the Kharaz mountains (Jebel Kharaz) . At-Tawila is built on a mountain called al-Karani ( English al-Karani ), at an altitude of 2650 m (according to other sources, 2400 m) above sea level and surrounded by impressive landscapes with terraces. At-Tawila is located halfway between the cities of Shibam-Koukeben in the east and Al-Mahwit west and about 55 km (according to other sources, about 70 km) to the north-west in a straight line from the capital of Sanaa .

30 km east of At-Tawil is the city of Shibama near Kaukabani mountain, or, as they say more simply, Shiban Kaukaban . [4] . Unlike another Shibam city, in the Hadramaut governorate .

History

At-Tawila was not mentioned before 1210. Presumably, the settlement of At-Tawila was created as a stronghold of the Zaydi Shiites during the period of Imam al-Mansur Abd ibn Hamza (1187-1217). The small city market and the county do not have a corresponding participation in the history of Yemen. Nowadays, it has become the capital of Kada .

Description of the city

In At-Tawila Posti, all residential buildings are built of large stone blocks. Quarries were nearby all the time and there was no shortage of stones. Often careers themselves served as construction sites. [4] [5]

The ruins of the fortress Mutahar-Bin-Sharaf-Uddin of the 5th century AD are located on a plateau rising above the city [four]

The old Souk (market) is still actively working in the city. A weekly market is held on Sunday. In 1987, Suk gained fame, as it was partially reconstructed and presented at an exhibition about Yemen at the Museum of Ethnology in Munich . [6]
