Biography
Very little is known about Ragnall's life. He was one of the sons of Gofrayd poppy Aralt, king of the Islands (died 989 ).
Ragnall poppy Gofrayd died in 1004/1005 in Munster (Ireland). His presence in Munster may indicate an alliance with King Brian Boru Kennethig against the growing influence of Sigurd Hlodviersson , Orkney Jarl and Mormar Caithness (d. 1014 ). Sigurd Hlodvirsson "Fat" was a vassal of the king of Norway. In 990, the king of Norway appointed Yarl Gilly as his deputy on the western islands. According to the Nyala Saga of the Hebrides, Gilly was married to the sister of the Orkney Islands jarl, Sigurd Chlodvirsson. Perhaps Ragnall ruled only a part of the Hebrides or was deprived of possessions of Sigurd Hlodvirsson .
The historian Benjamin Hudson (2005) claimed that the seahorse Ehmarkah Mac Ragnall (died 1064/1065 ) was the son of Ragnall the poppy of Gofrayd, and Cat Ingen Ragnall , the wife of the High King of Ireland Donnhad the poppy Briayn , was also the daughter of Ragnall. Ehmarkah poppy Ragnall was king of Dublin (1036-1038, 1046-1052) and ruler of the Galloway part of Scotland and, possibly, of the Hebrides.
