History
The naval forces of Saudi Arabia were created in the 1960s. In the 1970s, the number was about 200 people. The incentive to build up the group was the capture of several islands by the Iranian shah. In 1972 , the Navy of Saudi Arabia signed an agreement with the United States on the modernization of the national Navy. [1] In 1991 , the Navy of Saudi Arabia numbered 9.5 thousand people. In 2014 , a contract was signed with a French company for the construction of six multi-purpose frigates of the FREMM type.
National Navy took part in the fight against Somali pirates . [2]
Due to the danger of the penetration of the Islamic state into the water area of the Persian Gulf, the Secretary General of the GCC in Kuwait voiced the possibility of creating a combined naval force of the Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf.
