Location
The oldest part of the cemetery was located on the modern bend of Parallelnaya and Sevastopolskaya streets. The cemetery gate was located on the side of Parallel Street. In 1920-1940 , the necropolis grew westward, towards the railroad track. In 1941 - 1947 , the cemetery area almost doubled, due to the increased population of the city and the many victims of World War II . The expansion was mainly due to the new section between the streets of Sevastopol and Tunnel . At this time, at least 2,156 soldiers and officers who died from wounds in Sochi hospitals and when transporting the wounded by sea from Sevastopol, Odessa, Kerch, Tuapse and Novorossiysk were buried in the cemetery. About 1,500 people were also buried without accompanying documents and all the drowned by the sea.
History
The time of foundation of the cemetery is unknown. It is assumed that the first buried here were Russian soldiers who died in clashes with the highlanders. According to the metric books of the Sochi branch of the State Archives of the Krasnodar Territory, the first recorded burial in the cemetery dates back to January 24, 1870 , when Georgy Kozhukhar, who died from dropsy, was buried. The cemetery was divided into Orthodox, Gentile. Greek and Armenian sites.
By the decision of the Sochi city executive committee No. 38 of December 23, 1949, from January 1, 1950, the Zavokzalny cemetery was closed. In 1956, the remains of Soviet soldiers from solitary and group graves were exhumed and reburied here in 74 mass graves. This military burial became the basis for the Zavokzalny memorial complex , which now exists on the site of the cemetery, opened much later, in 1985 . The fate of the remaining burials of the townspeople was decided by Resolution of the Sochi City Executive Committee No. 303 of September 3, 1973 on the complete liquidation of the old city cemetery from January 1, 1974 .
