History
By decree of the Senate of May 29, 1753, among other units, which consisted of Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians and Volokhs who had escaped from the Turkish yoke, the third company of the Bakhmut Hussar Regiment was settled on the river Verkhnyaya Belenkaya . The resulting settlement received a double name: the Third Company - by unit number and the city of Upper - by the name of the river.
On January 10, 1821, a decree was issued according to which the official peasants of the city of Verkhny, where 1232 people lived then, were transferred to the position of permanent workers of the Lugansk foundry. They were charged with the obligation to transport coal on their horses and oxen from the Lisichansk mine to Lugansk.
In the early 1930s, the village became a working village, and from October 28, 1938 - a city. In the city were built North-Donetsk State District Power Plant, the chemical plant " Donsoda " and a glass factory [1] .
During the Great Patriotic War in 1941 - 1943. was occupied by German troops .
On January 4, 1965, the city of Verkhny along with the city of Proletarsk was included in the city of Lysychansk.
