Biography
Born January 21, 1864 in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1882, he moved to California to live with his brother, who worked in the city of San Gabriel .
Initially, Elmer worked on a ranch , then in a store as a furniture seller, earning money to attend an art school. Interestingly, for some time he even worked as a violinist , performing in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. [1] [2] Despite the fact that he studied for two months in the New York League of student artists and later at the London school Lambeth School of Art , Wachtel was largely self-taught.
In 1904, in Chicago, he married the artist Marion Cavanaf , they moved to California, where they lived and worked together in the Arroyo Seco area , near Los Angeles . Elmer worked in oil, and Marion in watercolor , so as not to compete with each other. [2] Traveled extensively in the southern United States and Mexico . Elmer Wachtel became known as a master of landscape painting. He died suddenly on August 31, 1929 during a working trip to Guadalajara, Mexico. The artist’s works can be seen in the Luguna Beach Museum of Art . [3]
